Software enables discovery of IPv6 devices on network.

April 11, 2008 - IPsonarŪ v4.1 actively scans network to collect all data related to global network visibility. Users can visualize all network devices/assets, drill down to analyze potential areas of risk, and identify appropriate corrective actions. With capabilities for discovery of IPv6-enabled routing devices connected to network, solution can provide proof that all appropriate systems have been transitioned to IPv6 in compliance with federal rollout mandates.

Lumeta's IPsonar 4.1 Enables Discovery of IPv6 Devices Connected to the Network

New Functionality Provides Enterprises and Government Agencies with a Solution to Track IPv6 Devices and Connectivity, Providing Compliance, Security and Network Efficiency

SAN FRANCISCO and SOMERSET, N.J., April 7, 2008 -- RSA(R) Conference -- Lumeta, the leading provider of Network Assurance solutions for enterprises and government agencies, today announced the immediate availability of the latest version of its flagship solution: IPsonar(R) 4.1. Lumeta's IPsonar actively scans the network to collect all data related to global network visibility. Using IPsonar, network managers, security managers and corporate executives can accurately visualize what's on the network, drill down to analyze potential areas of risk and identify appropriate corrective actions. New in IPsonar 4.1 is the ability to discover IPv6-enabled routing devices connected to the network.

RSA Conference 20008 attendees can view IPsonar in action by visiting Lumeta at booth 217 during the show.

Federal government agencies have been mandated by the Office of Management Budget (OMB) to transition their backbones to IPv6 by June, 2008. The deployment of IPv6 will enable worldwide IP-based devices to seamlessly communicate and interoperate in a much more secure and efficient manner. IPv6-enabled networks afford agencies considerable opportunity to add collaboration features to applications, helping them deliver on the e-government mission.

However, migrating to IPv6 is not without risk. The shift to IPv6 introduces major change which could negatively impact an organization's security posture. Failure to understand the current state of the IPv4 infrastructure -- including what's connected to the network and how traffic flows from device to device -- could introduce significant risk and cost into the IPv6 migration process. The IPv6 migration process poses security and compliance challenges, including unintentionally enabled IPv6 traffic, direct connectivity between devices, and initial degradation of an organization's security and compliance posture.

"IPsonar 4.1's unique capability to detect IPv6-enabled devices connected to the network will provide proof that all appropriate systems have been transitioned to IPv6 in compliance with federal rollout mandates," said Michael Markulec, chief operating officer, Lumeta. "For all organizations, IPsonar 4.1 provides heightened levels of security and efficiency by ensuring there is no hidden, or otherwise inappropriate connectivity."

A common phased IPv6 deployment strategy is to use a dual-stack environment. A dual-stack node has complete support for both IPv6 and IPv4. The two protocol stacks work independently but coexist within the same network making applications subject to from attack from both IPv4 and IPv6 enabled devices. Therefore, any security controls, such as firewalls, IDSs, VPN clients and so on, must be mirrored in both protocol deployments to provide full protection.

Additionally, many organizations have at least some subset of IPv6-capable devices, even organizations which are not actively planning an IPv6 transition. As the network changes, those devices, if not properly monitored and managed, can become IPv6-enabled without the organization's knowledge.

IPsonar solves the problem of both of these approaches with its ability to identify any unprotected or unmanaged IPv6 connectivity. With this release, Lumeta has enabled IPsonar to detect:

-- IPv6-enabled routers;
-- The number of IPv6 connections on routers;
-- The number of IPv6 routes on each router (utilizing the route table with all IPv6 connections);
-- The status of an IPv6 connection (whether up or down, administratively and/or operationally); and
-- IPv6-enabled devices via a newly updated MapViewer.

As an example, if an organization configured 100 routers and only 50 are discovered, it can immediately address the issue. Users can discover any IPv6-configured routers, visualize what is on the network, determine the configuration, visualize how traffic flows, and inventory what is being managed. Network administrators can also run the IPsonar scan several times throughout the IPv6 deployment to ensure appropriate operations during each stage of the deployment.

Lumeta IPsonar 4.1 is available immediately, with pricing beginning at $75,000. Pricing is dependent on the size of the network and number of connections under management.

About Lumeta Corporation

Lumeta provides large enterprises and government agencies with the global visibility needed to quantify network risk and measure the impact of network change. Our network assurance solutions enable IT organizations to deploy new business services, maintain existing service levels and minimize network security risk to ensure compliant operations.

Lumeta's flagship product, IPsonar, is the industry's only solution that allows organizations to measure risk from a global network perspective. IPsonar maps every asset on a network -- including assets not currently under management -- visualizes the connectivity between assets and networks to uncover risk patterns and policy weaknesses, and enables network and security teams to bring unknown assets under management while deploying security technology more effectively to mitigate risk.
