Bayer MaterialScience LLC Expands Medical-Grade Thermoplastic Polyurethane Family With Three New Products

New Medical-Grade Texin® and Desmopan® TPUs Provide Innovative Solutions for Numerous Demanding Medical Applications:

Bayer MaterialScience LLC expands medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethane family with three new products

Pittsburgh, March 6, 2008 - Bayer MaterialScience LLC (BMS) has expanded its family of medical-grade thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) to include a new Texin® resin and two new Desmopan® TPU resins. Featuring excellent chemical resistance, the new medical-grade TPUs are:
o Texin 285 - 85A ester
o Desmopan DP 2590A - 90A ester
o Desmopan DP 9370A - 70A ether

Texin 285 TPU is formulated for use in extrusion, injection molding and blown film processing. With its excellent abrasion resistance and moldability, the resin is useful for a variety of applications, including wound dressings, fabric coatings, tubing, packaging and films, and soft touch grips.

Designed for blown film manufacturing, Desmopan DP 2590A TPU may be used for wound dressings, fabric coatings, packaging and films, and surgical drapes. This TPU resin features excellent tear strength and puncture resistance.

Desmopan DP 9370A TPU is the softest medical-grade TPU in BMS' portfolio, making it ideal for use in catheters, tubing and soft grip applications.
Desmopan DP 9370A TPU can be extruded or injection molded. The resin features excellent hydrolytic stability and microbe resistance.

BMS' medical-grade Texin and Desmopan TPU resins have been customized for the medical market and meet the requirements of FDA-modified ISO 10993 Part 1 "Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices" tests for 30-day indirect blood contact applications. Other key properties/benefits of these medical-grade TPUs include:

o Excellent clarity for visual observation
o Excellent chemical and lipid resistance
o High abrasion, wear, tear, and stain resistance
o Excellent mold, fungi, and algae resistance
o Low extractables, especially compared with polyvinyl chloride
o Decreased risk of allergic reactions
o Radiation, ethylene oxide and dry heat sterilizable

"With the addition of these new medical grades, our TPU portfolio now features seven resins that meet the requirements of FDA-modified ISO tests," said Mike Zierden, head of TPU Resins NAFTA for BMS LLC. "We're offering an expanded portfolio of materials to medical OEMs and designers to give them greater design freedom while meeting stringent medical requirements."
