Hughes Introduces New WAN Optimization and Application Acceleration Technology

New Capabilities Improve Application Performance and Broadband Network Efficiency

GERMANTOWN, Md., Feb. 25 /-- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), a leading provider of broadband networks and services, today announced it has added new WAN optimization and application acceleration capabilities to its comprehensive suite of HughesNet(R) Managed Network Services. The new capabilities improve application performance and increase overall network efficiency, and are available for all broadband technologies - - wired, wireless and satellite -- thus dramatically reducing deployment costs and complexity.

Unlike competing solutions which typically require an additional acceleration appliance at every location or are limited to a single broadband access technology, the new capabilities are integrated into access routers at each location. As a result, enterprises can now experience the application level prioritization and optimization normally associated with leased-line MPLS networks, on more cost-effective broadband IP VPN networks.

"As more and more applications are deployed over wide area networks, IT managers are struggling with how best to manage their bandwidth without increasing costs, while maintaining performance of critical business applications" said Brian Washburn, research director, Current Analysis. "Hughes is addressing a key market need by enabling enterprise customers to enjoy a truly differentiated managed service over a broadband IP VPN without incurring the cost and complexity of a full MPLS network deployment."

The Hughes solution is ideal for enterprises that are experiencing poor application performance on their current broadband networks, or for customers on legacy networks seeking to migrate to IP networks.

"With our new WAN optimization and application acceleration capabilities, Hughes delivers a managed service with application delivery capabilities similar to an MPLS VPN, but at a significantly lower cost point," said Mike Cook, senior vice present of Hughes, North America. "Our integrated approach is unique in the industry, making the HughesNet suite of managed services a compelling alternative for those enterprises considering an MPLS network."

The new HughesNet offerings improve network utilization and performance of TCP applications by addressing common latency issues such as slow-start and window scaling. Sophisticated pre-fetch technology is employed to improve performance of accessing Web content while improving network bandwidth utilization through transparent data reduction, intelligent compression and multiple application prioritization levels. For enterprises with distributed sites across the country, the result is superior application performance over all broadband access technologies -- terrestrial fixed, wireless, and satellite.
