Ferraz Shawmyt A4BQ Fuses Offer UL-Listed Product Choices for Lower Ampere-Rated Applications

NEWBURYPORT, Mass. (Jan. 31, 2008) - Ferraz Shawmut, a global leader in the field of circuit protection, introduced its newly UL-listed Amp-Trap 2000® A4BQ 100-600 Amp Fuses, for applications needing Class L fuse dimensions with ampere ratings of less than 601. Plant and specifying engineers and consultants can use the flexible A4BQ to comply with stringent OSHA regulations and NEC standards.

Suitable for branch circuit protection, and with Class J fuse performance, the A4BQ 100-600 fuses meet three specific applications: ensuring flexibility on new construction projects and future expansions, providing an acceptable and safe solution for facilities that reduce power consumption by downsizing or consolidating, and meeting arc flash mitigation needs.

Specifying engineers and consultants have the flexibility to specify a single fuse for all new construction applications, and contractors can install and operate Class L service entrance equipment and switchgear on new or unfinished developments requiring less than 600A of load.

The A4BQ fuses were designed dimensionally for one-way interchangeability - meaning a Class L fuse of any lower ampere rating can be substituted for a given Class L fuse. The A4BQ fuses reduce the risk of change orders and save time and money by using a single fuse class, switch or holder for all development plans. This minimizes excess inventory and part numbers.

"In some cases non-listed fuses are being installed into service entrance equipment and switchgear because there aren't any alternatives," said Bob Lyons, product manager for Low Voltage Fuses. "UL standard 248-10, Class L Fuses, doesn't include fuses with ratings of less than 601 amps, and Ferraz Shawmut's A4BQ 100 to 600 Amp Fuses solve this problem."

Similarly, downsizing and consolidation often results in reduced power consumption, forcing facilities to install unlisted products into existing switchgear or replace existing service equipment. Ferraz Shawmut enables facilities to replace existing 601-6000A Class L fuses with A4BQ 100-600 fuses and retain a UL listing.

The A4BQ fuses also provide optimal overcurrent protection to service entrance equipment, large motors, feeders and other circuits. They reduce the magnitude and duration of faults for better arc flash mitigation.

According to the National Electrical Code® (NEC), installation of a UL-recognized product is not permitted as a branch circuit overcurrent protective device. Installing A4BQ100-600 fuses where oversized Class L fuses presently exist reduces both personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements and the industrial panel's hazard category. More information on arc flash hazards and prevention can be found at http://us.ferrazshawmut.com/arcflash.

Ferraz Shawmut's complete Amp-Trap 2000® A4BQ Fuse family is the most current limiting Class L fuse offering, and with UL-listed products ranging from 100 to 6000 amps it offers the widest range of options on the market.
