Hardinge's Next-Generation 5C2 Rotary Indexer

Hardinge's next-generation 5C2 Rotary indexer is lean and mean.

The evolution of the Hardinge 5C rotary system began in 1901 with the production of Hardinge's first 5C collet. Hardinge introduced the 5C "threaded-nose" spindle in 1940 on a precision bench lathe. In the 1960's they manufactured a 5C manual indexer using their threaded-nose spindle and collet closer design. Later the Hardinge 5C rotary system was manufactured based on their original 1960's mechanical design. Today Hardinge takes the 5C indexing market to the next level with more accuracy, more spindle clearance, more axial load and more radial load with their 5C2 Rotary Indexer.

Hardinge has streamlined their indexer body to a curved front casting over the spindle and has made the handle removable for increased spindle clearance and tool access. Their new robust, dual-bearing spindle accommodates heavier radial and axial loads increasing overall indexing capabilities. 100-lb (50kg) part weight and 1000-lb (4448N) tailstock thrust per spindle is not a problem - even on a quad unit with tailstocks. A hardened and ground steel worm gear with cross-axis helical gears and a hardened and ground steel worm drive shaft provide high accuracy and reduced wear. Double eccentrics provide the finest gear mesh adjustment. Hardinge has lowered the backlash range and improved accuracy overall. The customer can perform future gear wear compensation for extended life and improved accuracy over time. The Hardinge 5C2 unit takes the field with a ±4 arc-sec repeatability, ±25 arc-sec accuracy and a maximum runout of .0002" (.005mm) TIR. Each unit shipped contains a printout of accuracy - final inspection is performed using a Heidenhain encoder mounted directly on the spindle nose to assure final positioning accuracy and repeatability.

Hardinge offers three collet closer options to best suit the shop requirement. The pneumatic fail-safe closer provides 1760-lbs (798kg) of drawbar force and features a 27mm thru-hole. The pneumatic high-force closer allows reduction of gripping force for delicate parts. The manual closer is lever-operated with 950-lbs (431kg) of drawbar force.

It is easy to integrate the 5C2 Rotary Indexer into your CNC manufacturing application for true 4th axis interpolation. The Hardinge system is compatible with Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Hurco, Milltronics, Fadal, Haas Yaskawa and other CNC systems. The 5C2 is industry compatible for drop-in replacement with fast 360°/sec indexing speed. The Hardinge design incorporates a collet-ready spindle for total gripping flexibility. Collets, step chucks, expanding collets and manual jaw chucks can be used without the use of an adapter. This allows a wide variety of gripping options to handle most part sizes, shapes and materials.

5C2 Rotary Indexers are available in single, dual, triple and quad configurations with or without tailstocks. For more information contact Hardinge Inc. at 800-510-3161, fax 607-734-3886, or order online at www.hardingetooling.com.
