Questra Delivers Support for Remote Devices Not Connected to the Public Internet

Questra SoftwareCourier enables automated software updates, configuration management, usage tracking, and performance monitoring for offline devices

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 24 -- Questra Corporation, the leader in Intelligent Device Management (IDM), has announced the launch of a new version of the Questra IDM Application Suite(TM), which provides manufacturers with support for offline devices installed at customer locations. A new patent-pending application, Questra SoftwareCourier(TM), empowers manufacturers to increase the reach and effectiveness of their IDM strategy throughout their installed base.

"Equipment manufacturers realize a large proportion of their revenues and margins from providing value-added smart services to their customers," said Glen Allmendinger, president of Harbor Research. "By building intelligence into their devices and integrating intelligent device management into their business processes, they have created an opportunity to use device information to cultivate productive, long-term relationships with their customers. Questra SoftwareCourier expands the scope of information to include both connected and unconnected devices, resulting in more valuable services for customers and a healthier bottom line."

Ideally, an IDM-based support model assumes that devices installed at customer sites are continuously connected to the Internet. Realistically, however, many customer devices may be offline due to their location in rooms without network access, a shared network connection with other equipment, or a customer's IT policy that prohibits external connectivity. Until now, manufacturers had to support these unconnected devices outside the efficiency of their automated, integrated IDM systems.

Questra SoftwareCourier bridges the gap between devices in the field that lack Internet access and manufacturers' IDM enterprise servers. The application consists of a server component and a laptop component. With SoftwareCourier, Questra allows manufacturers to apply the same software management and monitoring processes to support offline devices in much the same way as online devices.

After loading the latest information and instructions for a device onto a laptop, a field service technician can make a site visit to automatically update the software on unconnected devices, collect configuration data for delivery back to the enterprise server, collect usage data for a billing system, or analyze performance data to optimize maintenance, among other support activities. To an IDM system, data from a SoftwareCourier laptop appears the same as data from a connected device.

"Questra continually works to help manufacturers increase the percentage of remote devices participating in their IDM ecosystems," said Walt Rossi, vice president of marketing at Questra. "With information from all devices, regardless of connection status, feeding into the same IDM-based server, centralized control and data reliability is ensured for all enterprise business processes."
