Video IC eliminates motion blur, film judder on HD LCD TVs.

August 24, 2007 - Frame rate converter IC, FRC 94xyM, eliminates motion blur and film judder on Full HD (1080p) 100/120 Hz LCD and Full HD high frame rate plasma TVs. Solution offers processing technology to generate 100/120 individual frames per second, using truD® FHD 120 motion compensation technology, from 50/60Hz broadcast content or 24 fps film source. IC uses spread-spectrum clocks throughout and features LVDS interfaces on both inputs and outputs.

Micronas' truD® FHD 120 Eliminates 'Motion Blur' and 'Film Judder' on Full HD Flat Panel TVs with 100/120 Frames Per Second

The 4th generation FRC 94xyM outperforms existing solutions with leading-edge Full HD motion vector estimation and compensation frame interpolation technology for 1920x1080p 100/120Hz televisions

FREIBURG, Germany, Aug. 14 -- Micronas (SWX Swiss Exchange: MASN), a leading supplier of innovative application- specific IC system solutions for consumer electronics, today announced its latest generation FRC 94xyM Full HD frame rate converter IC which eliminates unpleasant 'Motion Blur' and 'Film Judder' on Full HD (1080p) TVs. Driven by the need to eliminate motion blur and movie film judder that limits today's LCD TV performance, the new truD(R) FHD 120 technology is a breakthrough in video processing - it offers an advanced processing technology to generate 120 individual frames per second (fps) from 50/60Hz broadcast content and from 24 fps film source.

Market research firms such as DisplaySearch forecast a fast transition towards Full HD high resolution displays accompanied with the latest high frame rate 100/120Hz LCD technology. In 2008, the market could exceed 10 million 100/120Hz LCD TVs. The FRC-M is a key to drive such displays and to greatly improve overall picture quality.

Sports and movies look as sharp and real as scenic panoramas, because the LCD-inherent motion blur and movie film judder are eliminated."

The best proven method to overcome the motion blur effect on LCD TVs is to increase the image rate -- more images give a more realistic portrayal of motion. Leaping ahead of existing technologies, the FRC 94xyM generates 100/120 images per second using Micronas' patented truD FHD 120 technology. The result is a bright, clear moving image without motion blur on LCD TVs.

Film judder in movie content creates annoying flicker on larger, high brightness-and-contrast displays. De-juddering is the process of converting film, originally shot at 24 fps, to the TV display frame rates of 100/120Hz using motion vector estimation and compensation. Micronas' truD FHD 120 motion compensation technology increases the frame rate by generating additional frames. This eliminates judder effects that can be experienced while watching cinema content from any source, either broadcast or the latest-generation media players, which offer low-frame-rate 24p output on a conventional flat panel TV.

To achieve the best possible result, Micronas deploys a unique Full HD processing technology: the FRC 94xyM processes images at Full HD resolution. Consequently, the display delivers an image that is a perfect match to the source image. This is relevant for all flat panel displays, including LCD, plasma and rear-projection TVs.

LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling) interfaces on both inputs and outputs reduce cost and pin-out; even better, the reduced electrical noise improves signal quality throughout the design. The low-noise behavior is further enhanced by the use of spread-spectrum clocks throughout the IC. The FRC 94xyM can drive even the largest LCD panels directly.

The FRC 94xyM is sampling to qualified OEMs now.

Micronas will demonstrate the FRC 94xyM in hall 1.1, stand 135 at IFA 2007 in Berlin, Germany, from August 31st - September 5th, 2007.
