Angle Grinders feature vibration protection.

August 22, 2007 - Equipped with 15 A motor, 7 in. Model G18SCY and 9 in. Model G23SCY deliver no-load speed of 6,000 rpm. User Vibration Protection technology minimizes full-load tri-axial vibration, reducing end user fatigue. Tools have vibration absorbing main handles, which are connected to motor housing with moving joint mechanisms and padded dampers. To make grinders comfortable for both right and left handed users, on/off switches are center mounted on top of grinders.

Hitachi Introduces Low Vibration 7" and 9" Grinders Featuring User Vibration Protection (UVP) Technology

-- Full-scale Availability Set for Europe, North America, Asia, Oceania --

NORCROSS, GA., July 27, 2007 - Hitachi Power Tools today unveiled its first low vibration grinders featuring Hitachi's patented User Vibration Protection (UVP) technology that reduces full-load tri-axial vibration by up to 30% significantly decreasing end user fatigue. The G18SCY 7" and G23SCY 9" angle grinders feature vibration absorbing main and side handles, unique stator coils to improve cooling of the motors and new gear structures that dampen noise by up to 60% - all packaged into lightweight and ergonomically designed tools.

Vibration is a hot topic in the power tool world these days. Specifically the adverse health affects for the operator of the tool. The European market has been the first to take action (via The European Physical Agents (Vibration) Directive 2002/44/EC) to protect workers from Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (commonly referred to as "white finger" syndrome) by placing the responsibility on employers to minimize risk. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has recently adopted similar standards for measurement and exposure to vibration from hand-held power tools, but there are not any specific regulations in the US at this time. Tool operator safety is a top priority for Hitachi. The problem is being addressed through technological innovation and improved design, resulting in Hitachi's patented UVP technology which will make its way into many different tool categories in the near future.

The G18SCY and G23SCY angle grinders both employ UVP technology via flexible main and side handles that reduce full-load tri-axial vibration by up to 30% - the lowest vibration level in their class (3.3 m/s2). The tri-axial measurement is the sum of three directions of vibration produced (vertical, horizontal, side to side) and better reflects real world exposure. Tri-axial measurements may be as much as 1.5 to 2 times higher than single axis measurements (one direction of vibration, which tends to be the most dominant measurement available). Although manufacturers are not required to disclose vibration levels, they may publish them in single axis meters per second squared (m/s2) which appears superior since the lower the stated level, the less harmful the tool to an end user. However, tri-axial levels are a truer testament to the effects of vibration being produced by any particular tool.

The new vibration absorbing main handles on Hitachi's UVP grinders are connected to the motor housing with moving joint mechanisms and padded dampers (refer to diagram attached). These mechanisms and dampers reduce vibration and therefore reduce user fatigue, allowing the user to work with the tool for longer periods of time. The 3-position adjustable side handles and main handles are also covered in Hitachi's patented Elastomer compound which absorbs vibration while additionally provides a comfortable and secure grip.

Both angle grinders feature a new 2-part stator coil design that offers 1.5 times the surface area for 25% cooler operation. This helps keep the motors cool, prolonging the life of the grinders and resulting in best-in-class overload durability.

A newly designed gear structure reduces the noise level by up to 60% and lessens kickback effect experienced during start-up. Sound is absorbed by coupling dampers located between the gear and pinion making it more comfortable for the user to work all day long.

The G18SCY and G23SCY offer 15Amp motors with 2,400 watts of input power and 10% more output power than competitive models at 1,110 Watts. They deliver a no-load speed of 6,000 RPM. The on/off switches are center mounted on top of the grinders and allow the users to comfortably operate the tools whether right or left handed. A one-touch quick off mechanism provides added safety. Once the lock-on feature is activated on the power switch- it only takes one touch of the users thumb to shut the tool off entirely. An easy-to-manipulate spindle lock located at the front of the grinder makes it simple to change out the accessories as needed.

Both have extended wear carbon brushes that last 56% longer than traditional brushes with an auto-stop feature for simple and routine maintenance checks. The dust protected switches and sealed armatures protect the internal components from harmful dust and debris. At only 11.2 lbs each, they are lightweight for easier operation.

These new 7" and 9" grinders with UVP technology are covered under Hitachi's 1-year warranty and are ideal to debur die cast products, finish iron, bronze and aluminum and weld and torch cut surfaces. They can also be used to cut soft steel materials as well as grooving and cutting concrete and other stone materials.
