Norplex-Micarta Announces New OverWrap Tubing Capability
POSTVILLE, IA - Norplex-Micarta, the leading manufacturer of high performance thermoset composites, announces a new capability for OverWrap Tubing products. The custom tubing products are made by overwrapping high performance composite material around a rigid core, enabling manufacturers to use products with different properties on the inside and outside of the tube.
The Norplex-Micarta custom-engineered OverWrap Tubing equipment utilizes rollers instead of standard mandrels, allowing for nearly any size core and inside diameter (ID). With the new Norplex-Micarta equipment, tubing can be manufactured with overwrap sizes of 0.625" to 2" (15.8mm - 50.8mm) and outside diameters ranging from 0.75" to 3.5" (19.1mm - 88.9mm), in standard lengths of 36" and 48" (914mm - 1,219mm).
This new process reduces expensive material requirements by selectively improving properties in specific areas, such as adding thermal or abrasion protection through an external composite layer. Previously, manufacturers used time-consuming processes to assemble two separate tubes and adhere one to the other. There were also additional fabrication steps that increased the overall manufacturing costs.
Norplex-Micarta OverWrap Tubing can enclose virtually any rigid tubing or cylindrical core that adheres to composite prepreg materials, including steel, copper, brass, and certain thermoplastics. The custom tubing is ideal for challenging applications with demanding material requirements, such as plasma cutting machines, welding machines, and electric motors.
