Eaton Announces Availability of Power Xpert® Network Time Servers

PITTSBURGH ... Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation today announced the availability of Power Xpert® Network Time Servers. These network devices provide accurate time stamping and synchronization across all power system components to contribute to an enterprise's ability to proactively manage its power system as a strategic, integrated asset.

Organizations today can utilize network time synchronization to ensure the integrity of network operations and applications. Eaton's Power Xpert Network Time Servers synchronize equipment clocks using the IT industry standard Network Time Protocol (NTP), so facility managers can accurately correlate events at different points in the power system to effectively trace problems or critical events back to their sources.

"Electronic clocks do not keep sufficiently accurate time for the effective analysis of power events. Even fairly accurate computer clocks are likely to vary due to manufacturing differences, changes in temperature and the age of the oscillator," said Jim Thompson, manager of product management for software and meters, Eaton Corporation. "Accurate time stamping is critical for forensic analysis of the power system because it provides information that is vital for troubleshooting."

Free-running uncompensated crystal oscillators are used in a majority of microprocessors. The accuracy of the oscillators are frequently off by many parts per million. This means the microprocessor clock will gain or lose between one and 10 seconds per day creating a yearly time difference of six to 60 minutes.

Eaton's Power Xpert Network Time Servers are Stratum 1 network devices that provide Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). By communicating through traditional Global Positioning System (GPS) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular broadcast signals, the Power Xpert Network Time Servers are accurate to within 100 nanoseconds of UTC time. Power system components such as Eaton's Power Xpert 4,000/6,000/8,000 meters, which are capable of obtaining 100,000 data samples per cycle, can then be simultaneously coordinated throughout the power system to within one millisecond just by being on the local area network.

"Power quality events last for only fractions of a second, but they can have a catastrophic effect on the quality and reliability of an organization's power distribution system. Power Xpert Network Time Servers enable managers to see a complete picture, correlate events across the power system and take relevant actions," said Thompson.

The Power Xpert Network Time Servers are an integral part of Eaton's Power Xpert Architecture, the industry's most versatile Web-based solution for measuring, monitoring, connecting and managing power systems. The Power Xpert Architecture addresses some of the key issues that result from a lack of timely, actionable knowledge about power quality events and their potential negative effects on each piece of gear within a power system.
