PEEK Coatings suit food contact applications.

July 27, 2007 - Using PEEK by itself or as binder with fluoropolymers, Xylan 1100 Series provides adhesion to many substrates, yet requires minimum surface preparation. General-purpose Xylan 1100 offers wear resistance and high-temperature release, while Xylan 1144 alters ratio of fluoropolymers to PEEK binder for abrasion resistance. Xylan 1152 offers increased load bearing capability, and Xylan 1170 provides most corrosion resistance in series. All comply with FDA regulations.

Whitford Launches New Line of Industrial and Food-contact Coatings Based on PEEK

15 July 2007, Elverson, PA. Whitford Worldwide has developed a line of four new coatings that take advantage of the special properties of Poly Ether Ether Ketone (PEEK). Called the Xylan 1100 series, these are engineered to offer different (and superior) performance over competitive coatings.

Either using PEEK by itself, or as a unique binder with fluoropolymers, the Xylan 1100
series offer the following properties:
o Temperature capability in the same range of Whitford's current materials (500° F [260° C])
o Physical properties at elevated temperatures that exceed current offerings
o Excellent impact resistance: limited postforming is possible
o Vastly improved abrasion resistance, especially at elevated temperatures
o Improved wear under most circumstances (without reinforcement)
o Low coefficient of friction: approaches fluoropolymers (under most conditions)
o Resistant to virtually all chemicals, hydrolysis, and radiation
o Flame-retardant
o Can be FDA-compliant
o Can be pigmented to relatively light colors (beige, gray)
o Outstanding creep resistance, giving load-bearing capability
o Can be reinforced/filled with a broad range of additives
o Low specific gravity means better coverage for comparable unit/volume
o Wide range of film builds: from as little as 15 to as high as 100 microns

The Xylan 1100 coatings provide excellent adhesion to many substrates, yet require a minimum of surface preparation. Most applications require only a solvent wipe or vapor degreasing of the substrate to remove any surface contaminants.

The four coatings are:
Xylan 1110: a general-purpose coating with the most all-round properties, the optimum
combination of low friction, wear-resistance and high-temperature release.
Xylan 1114: alters the ratio of fluoropolymers to PEEK binder to achieve harder, more
abrasion-resistant coating with the least sacrifice in frictional values.
Xylan 1152: formulated to increase the load-bearing capability while maintaining an extremely low coefficient of friction.
Xylan 1170: Formulated to be the most corrosion-resistant of the 1100 series, while maintaining reasonable low-friction properties.

Xylan 1110, 1114 and 1170 all comply with FDA regulations (CFR 175.300). Xylan 1152 is not FDA-compliant.
