MTS Develops Smaller Mobile Hydraulic Sensor for Embedded Cylinder Applications

Mobile hydraulic sensor technology for reliable, non-contact operation...

CARY, NC - (April 5, 2007) - MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division has built upon its proven mobile hydraulic position sensor technology with the development of a smaller sensor to enable even more hydraulic cylinder applications. Designated the MS Series, the proven Temposonics® technology is designed into a 28mm diameter housing for welded and tie-rod compact cylinder (38mm) applications.

"Our customers found our MH sensor to be extremely durable when installed inside the hydraulic cylinder, even in harsh conditions, and we had requests for a smaller sensor to expand the application possibilities," said Drew Smedley, director of global marketing for MTS Sensors. "The MS sensor is an absolute position, non-contact linear sensor in a compact 28mm design."

The mechanics of the sensor are completely compatible with the existing design for embedded, in-cylinder applications.

With a 100g shock and 15g vibration rating, the MS sensor was designed for rugged environments, especially those typically encountered in construction, agriculture, and other off-highway machinery. It is fully sealed and embedded in a cylinder for long life.

The MS sensor consists of a redesigned sensor head with rugged housing and built-in electronics, a pressure-proof sensor pipe that protects the internal sensing element, and a position magnet. Along with high shock and vibration ratings, the sensor has 100V/m EMI protection.

Designed for cylinders 38mm in diameter (or larger), the MS sensor provides a measuring range of two to 78 inches (50-2000mm), doubling the available stroke length, while maintaining high levels of accuracy and repeatability.

The MS sensor provides a variety of position output options: 0 to 5V, 0.25 to 4.75V, 0 to 20mA, 4 to 20mA, or PWM. The MS sensor operates from -40 to +105°C, and can be purchased with either individual wire or cable connection options that are compatible with typical mobile equipment electrical connector requirements.
