Hybrid Motor suits high-power motion control applications.

April 5, 2007 - Specified for 460 or 400 Vac standards, Allen-Bradley High-Power Kinetix (HPK) Series combines induction and servo motor technology to promote precision and efficiency in material handling or web converting applications. Electrical winding design is optimized to mimic speed/torque curve of permanent magnet servo motors. Supplied in ratings up to 150 hp, motors are equipped with single- or multi-turn, high-resolution absolute feedback.

New High-Power Motor from Rockwell Automation Combines Induction Economy and Servo Performance for Cost-Effective High-Power Motion Control

MILWAUKEE, March 19, 2007 - Machine builders who have long sought to combine the efficiency of simple induction motors with the precision of servo motor technology can now turn to the new Allen-Bradley High-Power Kinetix (HPK-Series) motors from Rockwell Automation. Ideal for material handling or Web converting applications that require high power capacities, the newest addition to the Kinetix family of motion control gives OEMs and end users servo motor precision and performance at the power ranges and prices of induction motor technology.

"We've never offered a servo motor solution with power ranges over 30 horsepower, but the HPK motor extends the normal power range of a traditional servo motor solution up to 150 horsepower," said David Hansen, product manager, Rockwell Automation. "This allows machine builders to increase acceleration and improve the positioning, precision and overall system throughput, in some cases as much as 25 percent."

Rockwell Automation optimized the electrical winding design of the HPK-Series motor to mimic the speed/torque curve of a conventional permanent magnet servo motor, allowing the HPK motors to deliver peak torque that is twice the continuous torque when running at base speeds. The motors also are equipped with single- or multi-turn, high resolution absolute feedback that eliminates the need for time-consuming homing routines, improves velocity regulation, and expands the system's inertia matching capacity. This capability is new to induction motor technology, making HPK-Series motors the first of their kind to offer positioning, acceleration and productivity capabilities that are comparable to traditional permanent magnet servo motors.

"Regardless of whether you specify the North American standard of 460 VAC or the European standard of 400 VAC, the performance of the HPK-Series motors is fully optimized when they are paired with Allen-Bradley Kinetix 7000 high-power servo drives," said Hansen. "As this integration increases among the controllers, drives, motors and actuators across the plant floor, so will machine flexibility and efficiency."
