Dow Corning Launches New High-Performance Antifoam for Brownstock Washing

Pulp processing product delivers good knockdown and persistence

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA - Dow Corning Corporation, a leading supplier of innovative silicone solutions for the pulp and paper industry, recently introduced a new high-performance silicone foam control product - Dow Corning® AF-3258 PulpAid Compound.

Dow Corning AF-3258 PulpAid Compound is a 100% active silicone antifoam designed to control foam in aggressive foaming environments typically encountered in chemical pulping such as kraft and sulfite pulp washing. Compared to mineral-oil-based defoamers, this product provides excellent foam knockdown and persistence at lower use levels.

Dow Corning AF-3258 PulpAid Compound must be formulated into a dispersion or emulsion prior to addition to the foaming media. Formulators can prepare and preserve AF-3258 PulpAid Compound aqueous emulsions using many common commercially available emulsifiers and preservatives. Other ingredients that can be formulated with the product include siloxylated polyethers, hydrophobic silica and organic glycols.

"Silicone antifoams, such as AF-3258 PulpAid Compound, deliver significant improvements over oil-based emulsions in several ways," explains Don Buchalski, Dow Corning global market manager for pulp, paper, and tissue. "In addition to lower usage levels, they allow for better washing efficiency and drainage and a reduced need for bleaching chemicals. Also, because silicone antifoams do not have dioxin precursors like oil-based defoamers, they are safe for use in waste water treatment plants." In addition to antifoam compounds, the company carries other proven pulp and paper solutions, including lines of Dow Corning® brand emulsions, concentrates, and performance modifiers."

"Dow Corning is a technology innovator focused on the global pulping, tissue paper manufacturing, and paper recycling industry," says Buchalski. "Formulators and their customers can count on us to provide innovative, integrated solutions that will add value by improving product performance, increasing productivity, and lowering costs. Dow Corning AF-3258 PulpAid Compound is just one example of how we use proactive, creative thinking to develop products that meet their exact needs."
