Unique Synchromesh Cable Drives Feature Positive Traction to Replace Conventional Drives in a Fraction of the Space

January 24, 2007

New Hyde Park, New York - A new series of Synchromesh Cable Drives introduced by Stock Drive Products are uniquely designed for positive traction to replace conventional ropes, simple cables and cog drives, especially where tight space is an important factor. This new cable drive is designed to provide high precision positioning in electronic equipment such as: copying machines, X-Y plotters, typewriters, printers, word processors, etc. A key feature of the new drive is its ability to be used in three-dimensional serpentine configurations which enable the creation of extremely miniature designs. Synchromesh cable can be used with lower tension when compared with ropes which reduces power consumption. Unlike ropes, wind-up around drums is not required which eliminates problems with dislocated printing caused by accumulation of elongation when rope is used due to wind-up.

This patented miniature cable, identified as the A 6J 9- and A 6J 9M Series, consists of a straight center section, encased in Nylon and a helically wound outer length encased in Polyurethane. Both cable strands consist of braided stainless steel cores. The cable is stocked in both inch and metric in the following Pitches: .120", .150", .200" and .250" (3.048 mm, 3.81 mm, 5.08 mm, and 6.35 mm). The cable O.D. ranges from .059" to .134" (1.5 mm to 3.4 mm) and has minimum tensile loads ranging from 40 lbf to 200 lbf (18 kg to 90 kg). Pitch accuracy of the drive is ±.002" (±0.05 mm) and cumulative pitch error is ±.16" (± 4.06 mm) max. over 100 pitches. The flexing cycle life of the drive is 106 minimum where the pulley pitch radius is R = 13.9 x (straight center section diameter d2) and the static tension is Ts = .05 x TB (Min. Tensile Load). The temperature range recommended is -22°F to +176°F (-30°C to + 80°C).

There is a complete selection of 34 inch and metric Synchromesh pulleys designed to fit 1/8" to 3/8" (2 mm to 10 mm) shafts. These pulleys are made of Acetal with brass or aluminum inserts to provide the strength characteristics of all metal pulleys with the weight and cost savings associated with plastic components. Complete technical specifications are contained in Catalog D785 (Metric) and Catalog D790 (Inch), available free upon request from Stock Drive Products, 2101 Jericho Turnpike, P.O. Box 5416, New Hyde Park, New York 11042-5416. Phone: 516-328-3300 o Fax: 516-326-8827. Web: http://www.sdp-si.com
