Ametek Commercial Motors Introduces the Next Generation in Switch Reluctance (SR) Technology

Incorporating Latest in Digital Technology and Electronics Design

KENT, OH, --AMETEK Commercial Motors has launched the next generation of its INFIN-A-TEK' family of switched-reluctance (SR) motor-blowers. The GEN II INFIN-A-TEK motor-blower incorporates the latest advancements in digital control technology, materials manufacturing and electric circuitry design and thus sets a new standard for performance and reliability for brushless motor-blowers.

The GEN II INFIN-A-TEK employs a completely new digital speed control that dramatically reduces the complexity of its components and circuit board design and increases its overall reliability. The digital controller incorporates its own integrated power source. In addition, new speed control options are available, including use of AC or DC control inputs, as well as a resistor or potentiometer to vary speed.

Among the important characteristics of the GEN II's new more efficient design is its cooler operation. The GEN II features three areas of thermal improvement: 1) its innovative design and state-of-the-art components consume substantially less power; 2) its improved circuit board design is based on a two-fold increase of the copper standard that makes it far more robust; and 3) new mechanical motor efficiencies allow it to run 10% cooler, while providing the same power output as the previous generation of INFIN-A-TEK motor-blowers.

AMETEK utilized advanced development techniques and simulation to validate the design improvements incorporated into the GEN II motor-design to ensure cool-running, reliable operation in elevated thermal and high-vibration environments. The GEN IIs have demonstrated their ability to exceed their performance specifications, and every GEN II motor-blower is carefully tested after extensive run-in at elevated temperature.

The GEN II INFIN-A-TEK SR motor-blower is available in 5.7"- and 7.2"- diameter tangential bypass and 5.7"- diameter Acustek® low-noise peripheral bypass discharge models. There also are 9.1"-diameter high-suction and high-airflow FLO-TEK(TM) tangential bypass models. Models are available for both 120 and 230 volts with one- and two-stage fan systems. The 5.7" and 7.2" models also include low-voltage, direct-current versions.

"GEN II INFIN-A-TEK motor-blowers overcome the shortcomings of series universal motors and PM brushless DC motors, while offering end users the best features of both technologies," notes Denise Schier, Vice President and General Manager of AMETEK Commercial Motors.

The simplicity of the SR's rotating parts allows higher rotational speeds and power input. This translates into greater air performance for a given size without compromising reliability and durability. These added performance capabilities allow the GEN II motor-blower to achieve air performance levels not obtainable in PM brushless or series universal motor designs.

INFIN-A-TEK motor-blowers have neither the carbon brushes of series universal motors that limit the motor's life expectancy nor the drive magnets of PM brushless DC motors. The motor's microprocessor-based controller requires no carbon brushes. Those brushes, in addition to needing replacement, also produce carbon dust that can affect air quality. Additionally, the extended life of the INFIN-A-TEK motor is enhanced by a multi-phase bearing alignment and patented enhanced air-seal protection system that is incorporated into each model.

The GEN II INFIN-A-TEK represents the most advanced motor-blower available in the marketplace. For more information, contact AMETEK Commercial Motors, 627 Lake St., Kent, OH 44240. Tel: 330-673-3786. Fax: 330-677-3812. Web site: www.ameteklamb.com/
