Fomo Products, Inc. Introduces New Handi-stick Foam Adhesive

NORTON, Ohio - Oct. 27, 2006 - In response to an industry need for a maximum strength adhesive compatible with all polystyrene substrates, Fomo Products, Inc. has developed Handi-Stick, a durable, pressurized polyurethane foam construction adhesive.
Fomo will launch Handi-Stick at the 2007 International Builders Show in Orlando and expects a favorable reaction to its new foam adhesive from end users in multiple markets.

"Handi-Stick was developed by our R&D lab with the objective of creating a fast, strong bonding and durable pressurized polyurethane foam construction adhesive. We also had a specific goal to maximize bonding with all polystyrene-substrates without having any adverse effect on polystyrene," said Tom Fishback, Ph. D, technical director at Fomo Products. "We managed to achieve all of this and give users a fast-curing adhesive that is free from VOCs and solvents, and allows ample time to set all types of substrates."

As well as providing a strong, durable bond, Handi-Stick provides an absolute airtight seal that meets the American Air Barrier Association's (AABA) standards for air barrier construction materials.

According to Fishback, Fomo paid particular attention to the needs of end users in all markets and provided a line of Handi-Stick foam adhesives with open times that match the requirements of multiple markets.

"During our research we set out to understand what end users wanted from an adhesive," Fishback said. "We found that in the application of decorative architectural foam shapes and polystyrene blocks for Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction, end users needed an adhesive with fast working time, and we satisfied such requirements with our new lines."

Using its research Fomo developed the Handi-Stick Polystyrene Construction line with an extremely quick working time specifically for the ICF construction and architectural foam shape markets. Fomo also developed Handi-Stick Subfloor with a longer open time of 20 minutes, which is needed for laying subfloors. In addition, Handi-Stick General Use is available with an open time of 5 minutes.

In order to deliver a cost-effective foam adhesive, Fomo packaged Handi-Stick in pressurized cans; just one can of Handi-Stick will deliver more than 10 times the yield of a tube of caulk-type adhesive.

"Once Handi-Stick is mounted onto the professional dispensing gun, or mated with the plastic dispensing straw, more than 1,000 lineal feet of adhesive bead can be applied without changing cans, and the fast open time profile ensures that users spend less time waiting for sufficient bond strength to develop before moving on to the next application," Fishback said. "The professional dispensing gun also provides maximum control of the applied adhesive, which will reduce waste and eliminate any mess."

Handi-Stick is also versatile enough to function in multiple climates because as a polyurethane adhesive, its durability is not affected by harsh environmental conditions.

"Polyurethane adhesives are tough, flexible, and will not lose bond strength with aging. In fact, Handi-Stick will outlast any building where it is used," Fishback said. "In addition, we have proudly verified at the Fomo Products R&D lab, and through independent testing that no other foam adhesive specified for polystyrene offers a greater bonding power than Handi-Stick."
