Low Side LED Drivers are dynamically programmable.

December 22, 2006 - Capable of driving low forward voltage LEDs from 33 mA to 1 A, SP7618 enables range of LED lighting applications with zero external components and minimal design time. It can drive LED directly from single cell Li-Ion or 3 alkaline batteries in series without additional boost regulator. Product can also dynamically change current level and PWM width simultaneously. Also available, SP7619 and SP7619A Flash Drivers let user select from 2 pre-set current levels.

Sipex Introduces Industry's First Dynamically Programmable High Current Low Side LED Driver

No external components means zero design time for LED based Camera Flash applications

MILPITAS, Calif., Dec. 11 -- Sipex Corporation , today announced the release of the SP7618, the industry's first dynamically programmable LED driver capable of driving next generation low forward voltage LEDs up to 1 Amp for Flash and other applications. This device simplifies the design of multi-mode LED lighting when used for mobile phone camera flash, torch mode, and red-eye reduction flash applications.

The SP7618 allows for on-the-fly dynamic programming of the LED drive current from 33mA to 1A. Low dropout voltage gives the ability to drive the LED directly from a single cell Li-Ion or three alkaline batteries in series without the additional cost of a boost regulator. Other LED lighting applications may also benefit from the ability to dynamically change current level and PWM width at the same time.

In addition to the SP7618, Sipex also released the SP7619 and SP7619A Flash Drivers. These devices allow the user to select from two pre-set current levels. The SP7619 offers selectable outputs of 200mA and 500mA, and the SP7619A offers selectable outputs of 200mA and 700mA. This family of LED Flash Drivers enables a wide range of LED lighting applications with zero external components and near zero design time. Offered in a tiny 2mm x 3mm DFN package, these devices are the smallest high current LED drivers in the market today.

"Design simplicity is essential to Consumer Electronic applications", said Jason Lu, Sr. Technical Marketing Manager. "Sipex continues its commitment to providing unique LED driver solutions like the SP7618, SP7619 and SP7619A. Together with Sipex's charge pump based LED Flash drivers, system designers have the solutions necessary to use a wide variety of high power LEDs."

Pricing and Availability

SP7618, SP7619 and SP7619A are available now. Pricing for these products begins at $0.65 in 1,000 piece quantities. Datasheets and additional information on this family and other Sipex product offerings may be found on the company web site at www.sipex.com.
