Anti-Backlash Gears use FairlocŪ integral fastening system.

August 23, 2006 - Self-contained S1A5 and S1M5 Series feature built-in springs that force gear halves to turn in opposing directions relative to one another until tooth space between inner and mating outer gear is entirely filled. This provides automatic compensation for wear and thermal dimensional changes during life of gear train. Available in 303 stainless steel and 2024 aluminum, these 20° pressure angle AGMA QIO gears fit shafts from 1/8-ž in. dia and comes in sizes with 40-360 teeth.

Spur Gears offer FairlocŪ hub fastening system.

New Series of 1158 Anti-Backlash Gears from Sterling Instrument Feature the Patented FairlocŪ Integral Fastening System

New Hyde Park. New York - A new series of 1158 anti-backlash gears manufactured by Sterling Instrument feature the patented FairlocŪ integral hub fastening system which eliminates marred shafts. These 20° pressure angle AGMA QIO gears are identified as the S1A5 and S1M5 Series. The choice of FairlocŪ rotating component fastening system helps phase adjustment, timing, position adjustment and frequent removal problems with full component support along the entire hub section. These very cost-effective gears are compact, self-contained and offer a small gear hub envelope. Each gear is composed of a set of two gear halves that give the appearance of a split gear. Built-in springs, mounted around the hub, force the two gear halves to turn in opposing directions relative to one another until the tooth space between the inner and mating outer gear is entirely filled. This technique is applied to gears with diameters as small as .642" to eliminate all backlash, both fixed and va riable, in gear trains. Furthermore, because the spring-loading continually adjusts the take-up in tooth spacing, there is automatic compensation for wear and thermal dimensional changes during the life of the gear train.

These gears are stocked in both 303 stainless steel and 2024 aluminum and are designed to fit shafts ranging from 1/8" to 1/4" diameter. The suggested clearance between the bore and the shaft is .0001"/.0008". They are stocked in 120, 96, 80, 72, 64 and 48 Diametral Pitches and feature a .104" face width. Their sizes range from 40 to 360 teeth with O.D.'s ranging from .642" to 3.017".

The FairlocŪ system consists of two slots that are machined into the stainless steel hub, one orientated radially the other angularly. to create a transverse wedge which remains attached to the solid portion of the hub on one side.

The resultant cantilevered clamping section has a tapped hole to accept a cap screw which passes through a clearance hole in the solid portion of the hub, and into a threaded hole in the transverse wedge section. As the socket head cap screw is tightened the cantilevered section clamps the shaft securely. The screw can be tightened and released repeatedly without marring the shaft or affecting its torque transmitting abilities.
