SICK Launches New Safety Laser Scanners

S3000 Short Range offers 4 meter safety range - S3000 Professional CMS ideal for mobile vehicle applications

Minneapolis, Minn., - June 12, 2006. SICK, one of the world's leading manufacturers of sensors, safety systems and automatic identification products for industrial applications, today announced it has launched the S3000 Short Range Safety Laser Scanner featuring a 4-meter safety field. In addition, the S3000 Professional CMS Safety Laser Scanner (Contour Measurement & Safety) is concurrently being launched to meet the navigation requirements of complex mobile vehicle applications. The company's family of safety laser scanners now includes more than 15 models - the most in the industry, providing added flexibility and value to its customers.

These innovative scanners are used to safeguard work areas and protect personnel and equipment from damage or injury using predefined "Safety" and "Warning" zones. Applications include safeguarding AGVs and other mobile vehicles, assembly and production lines, overhead cranes, packaging machines, presses, robotic loading or unloading stations, stacker cranes, shuttles and fork lift trucks.

The S3000 Short Range
The S3000 Short Range offers a shorter, 4-meter safety field, ideal for applications such as slower moving vehicles or static applications where large safety fields are not necessary. The corresponding warning field radius is up to 49 m. The S3000 Short Range features a 190-degree scanning range and four different levels of integrated functionality for up to 8 user-definable protection scenarios. This integrated functionality enables simultaneous or alternate protection within a work cell wherein the operator moves from one area to another - for example, loading or unloading parts from a machine. Both the Safety and Warning fields can be freely defined via SICK's user-friendly Configuration and Diagnostic Software (CDS) tool. The size and shape of these fields can be defined to meet specific application requirements.

Professional CMS (Contour Measurement & Safety)
The S3000 Professional CMS offers all the functionality of the S3000 Professional with the added capabilities to meet the needs of the most complex and demanding mobile vehicle applications. Its added features include reflector mark detection up to 30 m and event-driven contour measurement data output up to 49 m. An interface with an onboard controller or computer enables this data to be shared for navigational purposes of the mobile vehicle.

The SICK family of S3000 Safety Laser Scanners is third-party certified by TÜV Rheinland for applications up to Safety Category 3, in accordance with EN 954-1; up to Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL2), in accordance with IEC 61508.
