Optek Develops 1W LED Package for Surface Mount Lighting Applications

Surface mount single LED device offers low thermal resistance, long operating lifespan...

LAS VEGAS, NV (May 30, 2006) - Providing lighting design engineers with a high brightness surface mount 1-watt LED in a robust, energy-efficient package, TT electronics OPTEK Technology has developed a miniature device with a thermal resistance of just 2°C/watt. Introduced at the Lightfair International conference in Las Vegas, the single-packaged LEDs are part of OPTEK's Lednium Series of solid state lighting devices. Designated the OVTL01LGA Series, the surface mount LEDs offer high luminance (up to 38 lumens), a full 120° viewing angle and are available in amber, blue, green, red and white.

According to Richard Saffa, vice president of OPTEK Technology's Visible LED Business Unit, the OVTL01LGA Series devices each feature one 1W LED chip mounted in a miniature copper surface mountable package. "The robust, energy-efficient design of this LED package provides ultra-low thermal resistance and a long operating lifespan," Saffa explained. "As the demand for solid-state lighting continues to grow, we believe that the flexibility provided to lighting designers by these single LED devices will fuel innovative new designs."

With its wide viewing angle and exceptional spatial uniformity, OPTEK's Lednium Series 1W LED assembly is ideal for a wide variety of solid state lighting applications, including automotive interior and exterior lighting, architectural lighting, electronic signs and displays.

The OVTL01LGA Series assemblies are available in amber (595nm, 38lm); blue (467nm, 6.5lm); green (524nm, 31lm); red (624nm, 27lm); and white (27lm). All colors feature a full 120° viewing angle in water clear lenses.

The OVTL01LGA Series exhibits DC forward current of 0.35A, with a peak pulsed forward current of 1A. Typical forward voltage characteristics range from 2.0V to 3.3V (color-dependant), and reverse voltage for all devices is 5V. Maximum allowable junction temperature is 130°C and the device features an ultra-low thermal resistance of 2°C/W. Operating temperature range is -50°C to +80°C.

The OVTL01LGA Series assemblies are surface-mountable and measure just 6.00mm x 5.10mm x 1.56mm.

Typical pricing for the OVTL01LGA Series devices start at $1.30 each in quantities of 10K pieces. Production quantity lead times, if stock is not available, are from 8 to 10 weeks.
