Stratus Launches Mobile Call Convergence Solution for Mobile Service Providers

Seamless mobility generates revenue today with path to IMS subscriber services

MAYNARD, Mass., June 12 / / -- Stratus Technologies, Inc. today announced the Mobile Call Convergence(TM) (MCC) solution, its SIP (session initiated protocol) standard-based software for seamless handover of voice calls between GSM /CDMA cellular networks and 802.11 (WiFi) networks, as well as an enabler for a wide range of other services. The MCC solution is a milestone on the road to achieving single-number subscriber access to any service or data using any device over any network. It enables new revenue-generating subscriber services today while paving the way to IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS). Service providers can now enrich their networks with IP (Internet Protocol) voice and text-messaging services, create a converged offering that bridges mobile and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) networks and advance the goal of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC).

Subscribers want seamless service between their network access devices and the networks to which they connect, while the providers -- in their drive to retain subscribers, differentiate their offerings, and build average revenue per user -- search for ways to seamlessly introduce new, converged services. The Stratus(R) MCC solution plugs the services demand/supply gap by making a wide array of new IMS-ready capabilities possible today within the existing network. In addition to seamless call handover between mobile and WiFi networks, with MCC providers will be able to offer:

o Convergence of mobile and IP devices: a subscriber can access the
network using an array of mobile or IP-based devices using a fixed
residential/enterprise broadband or WiFi connection.

o Convergence of Subscriber Numbers: One number identifies the
subscriber (or multiple numbers based on subscriber or provider
preference) who is able to receive calls over any network device
when a calling party dials that number.

o Call restoration: Calls interrupted because of a coverage gap are
automatically re-established when coverage is restored. The called
party hears a message asking them to remain on the line until
reconnected.

o Call redirection: A call received over either a mobile or WiFi
network may be switched to the network of choice from the handset
keypad.

o Presence-based Routing: The presence of the subscriber -- i.e.
where they are, what the status of their various devices is,
subscriber-established calling preferences -- is taken into account
when routing calls to mobile or IP devices.

o Preference-based Routing: Define preferences by time, date, caller
identity, and calling device to specify which of the subscriber's
devices will be used for any particular call or text message.

o Message or missed-call notification: A notification by instant
message(IM) or short message service (SMS) when a call is not
answered with or without voicemail.

"With its rich feature path, compatibility with existing network architectures, and inherently reliable multi-service platform, the Stratus MCC solution enables mobile providers to launch a unified service that's a win for them and their subscribers," said Ali Kafel, Stratus vice president of Telecommunications. "MCC capabilities extend far beyond the limitations of UMA to enhance the service experience for subscribers, while giving providers immediate opportunity to increase revenue and reduce subscriber churn. A combination of low initial deployment cost and low operating costs over the long haul helps preserve the bottom-line benefits, while advancing the goal of fixed-mobile convergence."

The MCC solution is available on Stratus fault-tolerant servers, which deliver the added advantages of an open Linux(R) operating environment combined with an Intel(R) processor-based platform known for 99.999% and greater reliability. This continuously available telecommunications-grade solution is NEBS Level-3 compliant. Solutions deployment, integration, and round-the-clock support are provided by Stratus' global professional and customer service groups.
