ND SatCom Presents SkyPEP - TCP Acceleration for Star-based VSAT Systems
Friedrichshafen May 9, 2006 - ND SatCom, a leading global supplier of satellite-based broadband VSAT, broadcast and defence communications network solutions, will be showcasing its new IP application support device SkyPEP at SVIAZ/EXPO COMM, which is being held May 10-13, 2006 in Moscow (booth 76C17). SkyPEP is interoperable with all star-based VSAT systems such as ND SatCom's SkyVIP, SkyARCS and also SkyWAN® network platforms. It provides high-performance IP Virtual Private Network (VPN) functionality together with TCP acceleration for secure communications via satellite links.
SkyPEP is ideal for the economically attractive delivery of services such as Internet access for corporate customers as it has a transmission performance comparable to terrestrial broadband connections. It operates in stealth-mode, automatically captures all TCP traffic, applies acceleration and does IPSec encryption. In addition, its superior HTTP pre-fetching techniques accelerate download speeds for web surfing, equaling those of terrestrial DSL.
SkyPEP accelerates the TCP performance by protocol optimization and data compression. Surfing the Internet becomes a more enjoyable experience as website response times are minimized and the transmission rate increases. The result is a remarkable enhancement for end users, who also benefit from the easy installation of the SkyPEP units to their DVB-RCS terminals. There is no need for the end user to install extra software or to configure web browsers.
Users benefit from an extra performance boost, enhanced bandwidth efficiency and a sophisticated array of security features. Apart from the integrated VPN functionality, SkyPEP also features a high performing firewall as well as a DNS cache and a DHCP server/relay agent to maximize the end-user's security and application support. The used software includes TCP compression mechanisms to reduce traffic load both on the forward and the return channel. Reduction on the return channel significantly improves the scalability of DVB-RCS services: as a result, a higher number of customers can be served.
