New Rugged, Reusable Intermec RFID Tag Withstands Temperature Extremes and Hazardous Exposures

New Rugged, Reusable Intermec RFID Tag Withstands Temperature Extremes and Hazardous Exposures for True Global Industrial and Logistics Tracking

o Wide frequency bandwidth and EPCglobal Gen 2 and ISO 18000-6B versions allow companies to use one tag worldwide
o Innovative antenna design provides superior performance on range of materials, including metal, wood and plastic
o Reusability reduces total cost of ownership

EVERETT, Wash., May 2, 2006 - Intermec Inc. today introduced a reusable, ruggedized RFID (radio frequency identification) tag capable of withstanding temperature extremes and hazardous exposures common in manufacturing and material handling operations. The new Intermec RFID Large Rigid Tag, available immediately in EPCglobal Gen 2 and ISO 18000-6B versions for use worldwide, allows enterprises to take advantage of the capabilities of RFID to track materials through demanding industrial processes and global logistics operations. Its innovative broadband antenna design provides superior performance on a wide range of materials, including metal, plastic and wood.

Because the Intermec RFID LR Tag is reusable, each use of the tag costs only fractions of a cent. The tag can be rewritten thousands of times, providing lower cost per use on reusable assets than even disposable labels. And because of its ability to function in demanding industrial environments and to provide reliable performance on multiple materials, enterprises can use a single tag to identify and track items such as subassemblies, work-in-process components, finished goods, material handling equipment and logistics containers through production, supply chain and asset management operations.

"RFID-based inventory and asset tracking systems are high-priority projects for enterprises because they address the chaotic business conditions that few other technologies can," said Jeff Woods, research vice president for Enterprise and Supply Chain Management, Gartner Group. "Now that a number of businesses are deploying RFID, the IT department has to find ways to reduce total cost of ownership. Reusable tags that can be used globally, even in extreme environments, can address a real-world problem that many face today."

The Intermec RFID LR Tag measures 3.2 cm x 14.27 cm (1.26 in x 6.1 in). Its rugged impact-resistant plastic packaging survives hazardous chemical exposure and withstands temperatures from -40 to 250F, -40 to 121C. The tag is compatible and interoperable with RFID readers that support EPC Gen 2 or ISO 18000-6B standards. Organizations that already have EPC- or ISO 18000-6B-based standard systems in place can conveniently and cost effectively introduce the Intermec LR tag for a variety of industrial, material handling and asset management applications.

The LR Tag joins Intermec's full suite of RFID tags and inlays, which includes more than 50 EPC Gen 2-compliant products and a variety of ISO 18000-6B-compliant versions. RFID tags and smart labels are available from Intermec in standard industry formats and offer a range of protections against heat, moisture, chemicals and other environmental exposure. Products have been optimized for many leading RFID applications, ranging from cost-conscious compliance tagging to lifetime item identification in challenging environments.
