Motors drive oxygen concentrator compressors.


May 22, 2006 - Featuring rotor with magnetic circuit, Series TG 2300 eliminates magnet wire and iron laminations in stator. In combination with neodymium-iron-boron magnets, thin air gap creates high power density motors with high inertia, minimizing losses caused by torque pulsation and facilitating smooth, quiet operation. Oxygen concentrators using TG 2300 motors can be powered by 24 V battery, car accessory socket, or standard 110 Vac electrical outlets.

Thingap Corporation Announces: Motor For Oxygen Concentrator Compressors


VENTURA, CALIFORNIA - April 19, 2006 - ThinGap Corporation, the leader in high power density DC motors, today announced the TG2300 Series of motors designed for use with oxygen concentrator compressors. The high efficiency TG2300 motor series allows longer battery life and higher inertia for smooth and quiet operation, while reducing weight.

"ThinGap's technology is well-suited to deliver the high efficiency needed for long battery life, even at lower speeds, and although lower speeds lead to vibration caused by compressor torque pulsation, it is smoothed by the high inertia of the TG2300," said Rean Pretorius, president & CEO, ThinGap Corporation. "ThinGap technology is gaining acceptance as a preferred technology for portable oxygen concentrators as cost reductions have become a catalyst for accelerating their use and patients find them lighter and much easier to transport than oxygen bottles."

An oxygen concentrator using the TG2300 Series motor can be powered by a 24V battery, car accessory socket or standard 110 VAC electrical outlets. Because ThinGap technology provides higher inertia, it minimizes the losses caused by torque pulsation. As a result, the motor provides higher efficiency, increasing the battery operation time limits on patient mobility.

With the use of the TG2300, OEM customers can reduce the weight and size of their oxygen concentrator, while increasing reliability and cutting costs by eliminating parts such as couplings and bearings. Additionally, the TG2300's stator does not contain iron which eliminates magnetic attraction of parts and facilitates assembly.

Typically, the optimum speed for compressors is between 1,000 and 3,000 RPM, which because of losses reduces the time the oxygen concentrator can operate under battery power. The challenges that were overcome include the extra losses caused by current pulsation due to low inertia. With a conventional BLDC motor, the pressure loading of the compressor causes a torque pulse once every complete cycle with a single stage compressor and twice every cycle with a two-stage compressor.

The ThinGap technology eliminates magnet wire and iron laminations in the stator and has a rotor containing the entire magnetic circuit. This eliminates hysteresis power loss. In combination with high-energy neodymium-iron-boron magnets, the thin air gap creates a high power density motor, with excellent characteristics for battery-powered applications. The TG 2300 stator does not contain iron, which eliminates magnetic attraction of parts and facilitates assembly.
