Variaxis 730-5X Machining Center with 50-Taper Spindle: Significant Productivity Gains Through Process Integration

MZK-1385 Variaxis 730-5X

In 1999, Mazak Corporation introduced the first Variaxis, a vertical machining center with tilting rotary table to perform five-face machining and simultaneous 5-axis machining. The outstanding results were higher accuracies due to avoiding multiple fixtures and greater economy due to avoiding the need for multiple machines.

Now being introduced by Mazak is the Variaxis 730 5-axis vertical machining center. Like the first Variaxis, it is a combination of a high-precision table with 150 degrees of tilting range and a 5-axis vertical machining center. The new Variaxis 730-5X, however, features a 50-taper spindle offering significant productivity gains in heavy-duty roughing and machining of castings, forgings, steels, and stainless steels. Compared to the Variaxis model with a 40-taper spindle, the Variaxis 730-5X achieved cycle-time reductions of 24% in cutting tests on identical workpieces.

Other high-performance characteristics of the Variaxis 730-5X include maximum spindle speed of 10,00 rpm, 40 Hp maximum spindle power, 387 ft-lbs maximum torque, and 1575 ipm rapid traverse rate in X, Y, and Z axes. The table size on a single-pallet machine is 24.8 in. x 19.7 in. while the one with an optional 2-pallet system is 19.7 inches x 19.7 inches.

The 50-taper spindle along with a newly designed slimmer spindle head maximizes the machining area in the Variaxis 730-5X and makes it possible to use longer tools. This allows reaching formerly hard-to-reach machining areas without interference. The standard tool magazine holds 30 tools; optional tool capacity of 40, 80, and 120 tools are available to reduce re-tooling time.

The Variaxis 730-5X is also environmentally friendly to operate. Air consumption is reduced by 50% during overall machine operation, its grease lubrication system reduces waste oil by 57%, and coolant life is extended an extra 50% due to no tramp oils from the linear guide lubrication system.

All this power, and flexibility also comes with efficient and straightforward programming with the Mazatrol Fusion 640M CNC. Programming is conversational, and existing programs are easily modified with only slight editing, which makes for greatly reduced programming time and program length compared to EIA/ISO code. Cutting conditions are automatically determined by the Mazatrol, and edited cutting conditions are stored in CNC memory. Once tool names and diameters are registered, tool management becomes very straightforward. Each completed program generates a list of required tools, and the operator sees immediately which tools are not currently stored in the magazine, making machine setups more efficient.
