Digital Marine Radar Scanners have 24 in. dia radome.

April 26, 2006 - Models GMR 21 and GMR 41 digitally process radar data within radome via DSP and present it on GPSMAP® 3000 series chartplotters. They feature 3.6° horizontal and 25° vertical beam width; GMR 21 has range of 24 nautical miles and 2 kW power output while GMR 41 extends to 36 nautical miles and 4 kW output. Units operate in -15 to 70°C temperatures and in RH up to 95% at 35°C. Radar overlay capability allows boaters to reconcile radar signatures with known objects on chartplotter.

Introducing the Garmin® GMR(TM) 21 and GMR 41 Marine Radar

Smaller Footprint, Same Great Digital Performance

OLATHE, Kan., March 27 Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN), today announced the new GMR 21 and GMR 41, two 24-inch diameter digital marine radar scanners for use with the Garmin Marine Network(TM) that feature industry-leading performance and value.

"Garmin is an industry pioneer in the development of digital radar and its presentation over our Marine Network via an Ethernet connection," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's vice president of marketing. "With the GMR 21 and 41, we're offering the same best-in-class low profile and narrow beam width -- now available in a space-saving 24-inch radome."

With the GMR 21 and GMR 41, all radar data is digitally processed within the radome via a digital signal processor, and is efficiently presented on Garmin's GPSMAP® 3000 series of chartplotter/multifunction displays (MFDs). Digital processing allows for more precise recognition, enhancement, and filtering of radar echoes -- making the finished display easier to read and interpret. Similar to Garmin's GMR 20/40 radar scanners, the new units feature Garmin's unique convex antenna design, giving the radome a narrower beam width and a lower physical profile -- for the best performance and value in its category.

The GMR 21 (2kW radome) and the GMR 41 (4kW radome) feature an industry- leading 3.6-degree horizontal and 25-degree vertical beamwidth, which allow for accurate target acquisition and separation. The GMR 21 has a range of 24 nautical miles (nm), while the GMR 41 extends to 36nm.

The GMR 21 and 41 both have radar overlay capability, allowing boaters to reconcile radar signatures with known objects on the chartplotter. Users can also configure a split-screen, dual overlay with a standard radar presentation.

The units also offer MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) capability, which allow boaters to track the bearing, course, speed and predicted closest approach (by both time and distance) of up to 10 targets. MARPA functionality requires a GPSMAP 3000 series MFD and an optional heading sensor.

The GMR 21 and 41 feature automatic and manual sensitivity and tuning controls, including gain, sea clutter, and rain clutter -- which allows boaters to spend less time tuning the unit and more time navigating. The units also boast selectable interference rejection, which mitigates the effect of nearby radar transmissions.

Other specifications for the GMR 21 and GMR 41 include:

o Physical size/RPM: 24" diameter radome, 8" high, 24 RPM
o Weight: 26 lb. radome
o Beam width: 3.6° maximum horizontal, 25° nominal vertical
o Receiver downconverter noise figure: 4 dB
o Power output: 2kW (GMR 21), 4kW (GMR 41)
o Power input: 10-35 Vdc, 25W
o Maximum/minimum range: 24nm/20m (GMR 21), 36nm/20m (GMR 41)
o Range scales (range rings): 1/8nm (1/32nm) to 36nm (9nm)
o Operating temperature range: -15°C to 70°C, relative humidity up to 95% at 35°C
o Range ring (bearing accuracy): 20 meter +/- 1.5% of range scale, whichever is greater, (1 degree)
o True or relative motion mode
o Variable range markers: 2 user adjustable, capable of floating
o Electronic bearing lines: 2 user adjustable, capable of floating
o User waypoints and navigation lollipop, with ability to create waypoints on radar display
o Guard zone alarm: 2 zones, user adjustable

o Timed transmit: variable transmit and standby times
o Off center function: look ahead, auto shift, and manual
o Cable length: 15 meters
o Waterproof: IEC 60529 IPX-7

The GMR 21 and GMR 41 communicate with the Garmin Marine Network through a waterproof 100-megabit plug-and-play proprietary network -- which affords users the ability to expand their boat's system as needed. A Marine Network cable connector kit is also included for customizing installation.

The Garmin Marine network can provide important situational awareness data like GPS, radar, sonar, and near real-time graphical weather data and audio channels directly on the GPSMAP 3000 series MFD, through a subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather and XM Radio.

The GMR 21 and GMR 41 are expected to be available in May 2006. The GMR 21 has a suggested retail price of $1799.99, and the GMR 41 has an MSRP of $2199.99. See http://www.garmin.com/ for more details.
