New Sugino Varimec Drill Unit Proves Ideal for Drilling, Counterboring and Burnishing; Excellent End-Milling and Facing Operations

Itasca, Illinois. Sugino recently unveiled their new intermediate-size, mechanical-feed, 1.5 HP (1.2 kW) electrically-driven Varimec Selfeeder drill unit to meet the demand of manufacturers for accurate holemaking requirements in a wide-range of metals and other materials, announced Sugino National Sales Manager John Fischer. Fischer stated the Varimec SSV-4 drill units are being installed in a wide range of precision applications including the automotive and aerospace industries, in electronics, computers and medical devices, and in other areas where high precision and reliability are required.

Like the two previously introduced Varimec 0.5 HP and the 3.25 HP drill units, the SSV4 quill-fed Selfeeder is capable of precision end-milling and face-machining operations.

The SSV-4 is available with chuck capacities from 0.07" to 0.787" (2.0mm to 20.0mm). It is available in two models: a low-speed/high-torque unit with no-load spindle speeds ranging between 250 - 1,750 RPM and torque is rated between 5.24 - 9.07 ft. lbs. The high-speed SSV4 model has a no-load spindle speed between 1,000 - 7,000 RPM and torque rated at 1.33 - 2.29 ft. lbs.

The total stroke length for the SSV4s as 9.83" (250mm). The adjustment length for the rapid advance is variable; the rapid-approach and return speed is 7.92"/sec. (220mm/sec). Maximum cutting speed is 0.656"/sec (16.7mm/sec.). Spindle runout for the SSV4 Varimec is very precise: under 0.0004"TIR.

Internal linear slides used to guide the quill are among the innovative engineering features incorporated in the SSV4 that has increased the rigidity of the unit and reduced the size. Designing the spindle motor within the moving Z-axis quill and use of other proprietary features have reduced the overall size of the SSV4 to 29.8" (758mm).

The extreme high rigidity of the Varimec drill unit parallels the rigidity of machining centers. The small size of the Varimec SSV4 coupled with the high rigidity eliminates side-load chattering and enhances the Varimec versatility to perform precision drilling, end-milling and face machining.

Nominal weight of the SSV4 is 175 lbs. (80kg).

Fischer reports, "The SSV4, as with all Varimec drill units, was designed with AC servo motor-driven ball screws. The size, accuracy and reliability of the SSV4 will prove valuable to manufacturers using multi-process machining equipment. These drill units offer an economical option to CNC machining c enters for high-quality production without the high-cost burden. And, by using more than one spindle at a time, production time drops and profits increase."

"These are the manufacturers who are concerned with consistent hole quality, burr reduction and improved tool life when drilling deep and/or shallow holes in the toughest metals including titanium, exotic and high-nickel alloys, The SSV4s can also be used to drill in aluminum, cast iron, plastics and in composite materials".

Programming is accomplished with an available hand-held Programming Console to input information or through the R232C port for use with a laptop computer.

The controller for the SSV4 can store up to 99 individual programs. There are 13 preprogrammed drill modes including standard, step, dwell, skip, spot-face, inverse spot-face and other drilling modes to simplify set-up and production.

The SSV4, as with all Varimec Selfeeders, can be equipped with multi-spindle drill heads and off-set drill heads to increase their productivity and versatility.

The Varimec SSV4 is furnished with a feed controller, an inverter for spindle speed operation, all interfacing cables and hardware that are necessary for easy integration into any manufacturing operation, cell, system or dedicated machinery. Varimec Selfeeder drill units can be mounted directly to a machine base or to adjusted columns to provide accurate drilling or machining at any required angle.

The Sugino "Varimec" Selfeeder drill units are warranted to be free from defects in materials and original workmanship for one year from date of purchase.

Sugino Corp. manufactures and markets a line of SelfeederŽ automated drilling and Synchro TapperŽ tapping machines, Self-Center(TM) machining centers, SuperollŽ roller burnishing tools, Jet-CleanŽ Center high-pressure water-jet cleaning and deburring systems, U-Jet(TM) high-pressure water-washing systems and other metalworking and maintenance equipment.
