Chipbreaker Designs suit various turning applications.

February 22, 2006 - Designed for ValTURN(TM) Turning System, turning inserts come in 4 chipbreaker geometries: positive/negative C5 for general-purpose turning, round RN5 for heavy-duty roughing and interrupted cuts, and wiper WN3/WN5 for high-speed finishing and high-feed operations. Used on steels, stainless steels, and abrasive cast iron materials, products meet application-specific requirements with variety of shapes: round, diamond, square, triangular, and trigon.

Four New Chipbreaker Designs Widen Range of Turning Applications

Valenite LLC continues to expand the scope of applications for its ValTURN(TM) Turning System with the introduction of four new chipbreaker geometries-a total of 46 insert styles-to its lineup of high-productivity turning inserts. The new geometries include a positive/negative form for general-purpose turning, round inserts for heavy duty roughing and interrupted cuts, and two wiper geometries for high-speed finishing as well as high-feed operations. The inserts are designed to provide excellent chip breaking and evacuation capabilities that, along with the fact that the positive/negative and round chipbreakers styles are offered in coated grades while the two wiper geometries are available in three grades, focus these inserts' optimum performance levels at turning applications involving steels, stainless steels and abrasive cast iron materials.

The selection of inserts is further refined to application-specific requirements with a variety of shapes offered including various diamond forms, square, triangular and trigon geometries in addition to the round inserts, plus inscribed circle diameters and thickness options. The new top form chipbreakers include:

o C5 Designation-This geometry features a positive axial and radial cutting edge, has a open chip groove design, and is double sided pos./neg. configured. It develops a free cutting action and excellent chip control for general purpose machining of steels, stainless steels, and high temperature alloys. Available in grades VP5515 and VP5525.

o RN5 Designation-Chipbreaker, designed on double-sided round tools that present a tough cutting surface with excellent chip breaking and evacuation control at high feed rates. Ideal for general duty and roughing operations, and for interrupted turning of steels and stainless steels. Available in grades VP5515 and VP5525.

o WN3 Designation-This doubled edged wiper's top form geometry along with a unique chip deflector design at the corner radius develops excellent chip control at low depths of cut. Insert is ideal for high feed rate applications and, with a positive feed angle and reduced cutting forces, typically produces a surface finish that is 50-70% better than when compared to the results from conventional inserts. Used for finish machining of steels, stainless steels and cast irons. Available in grades VP1510, VP5515 and VP5525.

o WN5 Designation-A more robust wiper insert than the WN3, with stronger design, strength and increased impact resistance to allow for light semi-finishing in addition to finishing applications. Features and performance for machining steels, stainless steels and cast irons are like the WN3 and available in grades VP1510, VP5515 and VP5525.

The two Valenite grades VP5515 and VP5525 are MTCVD-process coated carbide using TiCN/Al2O3/TiN. The VP1510 grade incorporates a fine grain substrate and a polished surface along with the TiCN/Al2O3 coating to provide wear resistance, enhanced toughness and resistance to build-up in high-speed applications of steels and cast irons. The VP5515 and VP5525 grades both feature a cobalt-enriched substrate and provide resistance to edge chipping as well as wear and build-up resistance. Grade VP5515 is for steels and cast irons; VP5525 for steels and stainless steels.

The full selection of Valenite chipbreakers within the ValTURN Turning System include inserts for steel, stainless steels, cast irons, high temperature alloys, aluminum and non-ferrous alloys, and hardened part turning applications. Complementing the inserts are ValTURN ProGRIP(TM) toolholders that offer stability, accuracy and versatility in an easy-to-use format.

As with all Valenite products, the ValTURN Turning System tools are supported through the company's ValPro Customer Service group for ordering, pricing and delivery scheduling, plus a technical staff offering continuously updated product and application data, and recommendations to optimize metal cutting productivity.
