Constant Velocity Joint Boots help protect components.

February 8, 2006 - Flexible sealing and protection boots for constant velocity joints (CVJs) lend to increased component protection and life. Plunge boots, made from thermoplastic elastomers, increase wear resistance for CVJs through features such as 140°C max operating temperature tolerance and resistance to cracks as well as high-velocity impacts. Products exhibit high-speed spin stability as well as resistance to inner pressure changes.

GKN Driveline Announces More Durable CVJ Boots

REDDITCH, England, February 2/ --- New Material - Next Generation Sealing Concept

Following fast on the announcement of the company's "breakthrough countertrack(TM) and crosstrack(TM) technology" for constant velocity joints (CVJs), GKN Driveline announces the development of a further new-generation drivetrain product. The company's new design of flexible sealing and protection "boots" for constant velocity joints significantly increases component protection and life.

For GKN Driveline customers, the new plunge boots, made from Thermo-Plastic Elastomers (TPE) offer smaller overall dimensions while increasing wear resistance for the CVJ through features such as:

-- High operating temperatures up to 140 degrees Celsius
-- Resistance to high-velocity impacts, e.g. from stones
-- Superior crack resistance
-- High-speed spin stability
-- High resistance to inner pressure changes

TPE also gives added protection during transportation and vehicle assembly, plus more consistent material quality, over conventional rubber boots. Recycling of TPE during production is common practice.

Rob Rickell, driveshaft engineering director for GKN Driveline, said, "The sealing system of a CVJ is the most susceptible product within the driveshaft. Its key function for the lifetime of our new CVJ products requires careful attention to design and material selection, always taking into account the interactions between the CVJ and the boot. Introducing TPE boots for sealing our plunge joints will allow us to exceed today's highest performance requirements and be ready for our customers' future needs. This follows fast on the heels of our countertrack(TM) and crosstrack(TM) 'breakthrough' technology, important advances of which we are very proud."

GKN Driveline is the largest business within the GKN Group, and a world leader in the design and production of driveline components and systems. GKN Driveline produces sideshafts, propshafts, mechanically and electronically controlled torque management systems and geared components. GKN Driveline is a global tier one supplier with sales in 2004 totaling 2.2 billion pounds Sterling (euro 3.2 billion). Headquartered in Redditch, UK, the company has 21,000 employees and supplies all of the world's major vehicle manufacturers from 49 facilities in 31 countries worldwide. Car and light-truck drivelines are typically equipped with anywhere from two to six driveshafts that include several CVJs per shaft. GKN Driveline is the world's leading supplier of driveshafts with CVJs that are used to help transfer power from a vehicle's engine to its wheels. There are two main driveshaft products: sideshafts, used on the left or right side of the vehicle or propshafts, used towards the front or rear direction of the RWD, AWD or 4x4 vehicle.
