International Paint LLC Introduces a Full-Range of OSHA-Compliant, Non-Slip Coatings

HOUSTON - December 9, 2005 -- International Paint LLC, an Akzo Nobel company, and one of the world's leading providers of high-performance coatings, introduces Intershield non-slip systems, an extraordinary new line of OSHA-compliant coatings designed to meet the needs of the steel fabrication industry.

Intershield's non-slip technology was developed after extensive research and testing by International Paint's worldwide ISO-approved 9001:2000 research facilities, in an effort to provide innovative, cost-effective solutions to OSHA regulation 1926.75(3)*. Slated to go into effect on July 18, 2006, the new regulation requires that all walking surfaces coated with paint or similar material must meet a wet slip resistance level of .50, as measured by a Variable Incidence Tribometer (VIT), per ASTM F1679-96.

"Unfortunately, the conventional coatings currently used by the construction industry to provide non-slip protection on the job site don't meet this requirement," said Ian Rowell, International Paint's Vice President of Sales, North America. "Our goal was to develop a line of products that not only meet OSHA and VOC regulations, but also provide a significant upgrade to the performance and application process of the applied coating system, both in the fabrication shop and in field applications."

The ultra-durable, fast-drying single pack polymer coatings can help fabricators maximize production throughput because they are pre-mixed with the precise amount of required aggregate, allowing shop applicators to apply the coatings directly from the can. In addition, the non-slip systems can be rolled on, alleviating the wear and tear on spray gun equipment from harsh aggregate loaded materials.

The Intershield family of non-slip coatings provides regulatory compliance, with high-quality architectural versatility for any new construction scenario:

Intershield 584 - A solvent-based polymer offering an economical solution to fabricators who are not impacted by strict VOC regulations. Suitable for application over a wide range of products including epoxy primers and urethane or alkyd finishes. Can also be overcoated by a variety of alkyd, epoxy and polyurethane finishes. Formulated in a clear finish to preserve underlying color.

Intershield 584HS - A specially formulated solvent-based polymer that provides compliance with OSHA and most current VOC regulations. Suitable for application over a wide range of products, including epoxy primers and urethane or alkyd finishes. Formulated in a clear finish to preserve underlying color.

Intershield 571 - This distinctly formulated water-based polymer provides an economical, ultra-low VOC solution, with superior durability over traditional products. Suitable for application over a wide range of products including zinc or epoxy primers, urethane and alkyd finishes. Formulated in a clear finish to preserve underlying color.

Intershield 818 - A revolutionary peelable non-slip coating that can be applied to the top flange of a steel beam, allowing fabricators to apply an aesthetically pleasing coating scheme, without the adverse appearance of non-slip aggregate. After compliance is no longer needed, the patented "peelable" technology allows the coating to be easily removed, even under a wide range of temperature conditions. The coating provides an added value by protecting the coated steel from grinding debris, oil, grease and overspray, and can be applied over a wide range of coatings including certain non-ferrous substrates.

Across the globe, International Paint continues to provide customers with high-quality, protective coatings products designed to meet the specific needs and demands of the industries they serve.
