Light Column® Ensures Flexible Visual Communications

ProcĂ©dĂ©s ChĂ©nel International, a French specialist in materials and techniques for temporary signage and architecture, has just launched a durable plastic luminescent column for visual communication: the LIGHT COLUMN®. Ideal for events and museography, it is also useful for exhibition and decoration applications. Its lightweight structure, a flexible, unbreakable polypropylene sheet curved as a column and ProcĂ©dĂ©s ChĂ©nel's Drop Paper® fitted over it, make it easy to transport, position, and change. With no metal framework, this simple column provides a complete luminosity.

The column's construction begins with the two polypropylene sheets that have its outside vertical edges folded in. The edges are connected by three plastic rivets, one at the middle and one near each end, for attaching supporting pieces. Each column comes with three supportive shape makers that fit laterally on the inside of the sheets. The shape makers are constructed as two bowed plastic strips with notched ends with a circle in the middle for a fluorescent tube to pass through, and are shorter than the flattened plastic sheet. By snapping the notched ends of these shape makers over the rivets on the folded-in edges of the plastic sheets, the sheets are bent and secured as a column. The column can stand on its own due to the polypropylene's thickness.

A simple light socket fits through the circle of the lower shape maker and attaches to it by screwing a ring on top, similar to fitting a lampshade onto a table lamp. A fluorescent tube can then be screwed into the socket, fitting vertically. ProcĂ©dĂ©s ChĂ©nel provides a fluorescent tube with one socket on the end to specifically fit with the LIGHT COLUMN®'s socket. The tube is covered in plastic so the glass bulb does not shatter. The radiance and color of the LIGHT COLUMN® can be altered by simply juxtaposing or superposing several fluorescent tubes of various lengths and colors.

A finishing sheet, which can be Drop Paper® or a similar thin, flexible material, carries the visual communication and fits over the assembled column. It is made with two hard vertical edges that are folded and fitted in the seam between the two edges of the plastic column. As it requires no adhesive, the column's message can be quickly changed by simply replacing the finishing sheet.

Self-standing or suspended, LIGHT COLUMN®'s polypropylene shell is curved for greater stability and visibility and is shock-absorbent to maintain its original shape and prevent damage. When the column needs to be broken down, the plastic's flexibility and light weight allow for easy disassembly and can be stored flat.

LIGHT COLUMN® is available in modules in a range of heights (from 11.8 in to 7.6 ft) and widths (from 8.6 to 29.5 in). The modules can also be stacked to extend the height. The columns are locked together with two notched longitudinal reinforcement strips that lock onto the plastic rivets inside the seams. The finishing sheets placed over the columns also help hold them in position.

In compliance with anti-fire legislation, the sheets forming the framework of the LIGHT COLUMN® can be made of translucid M4-rated polypropylene or light M2-rated PETG (not easily flammable). The finishing sheets are usually M1-rated Drop Paper® (fire-retardant material).
