IBM 3996 Optical Library Offers Expansive Optical Storage for Data Retention

At a glance
The IBM 3996 Optical Library Models 032, 080, and 174 use 30 GB optical disc technology and features:
5.25-inch 30 GB optical drive technology to provide up to three times the capacity of previous optical technology offered by IBM
Support for Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library
Three models with physical capacities of up to 960 GB, 2.4 TB, or 5.2 TB
3996 Model 032 has one drive. 3996 Model 080 and 3996 Model 174 have two drives.
Options for adding additional drives to improve library performance; one drive on the 3996 Model 032, two drives on 3996 Model 080 and 3996 Model 174.
Adding two drives to either 3996 Model 080 or 3996 Model 174 reduces the maximum available storage capacity
An optional barcode reader
Low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface
A see-through side panel for viewing the auto-changer and drives during library operation
Insertion and removal of cartridges via the entry/exit slot
Support for IBM i5 and iSeries family of workstations and servers

Overview
The IBM 3996 Optical Library is designed for excellent reliability and performance. The large-scale, externally attached, 3996 uses 5.25-inch 30 GB Ultra Density Optical (UDO) technology and is available for the IBM i5 and iSeries(TM) family of workstations and servers. The 3996 is available in three models and:

Provides up to three times the capacity of previous optical libraries offered by IBM
Supports Write Once, Read Many (WORM), and rewritable recording technologies in a single library
Includes a barcode reader as an optional feature
Has a low voltage differential (LVD) SCSI interface
You can choose from three models:

The 3996 Model 032 has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 960 GB. Each of the 32 media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model 032 has one 30 GB optical disc drive, and an option for adding a second drive.

The 3996 Model 080 has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 2.4 TB. Each of the 80 media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model 080 has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of increasing to four drives. When the additional drives are added, the capacity of the Model 080 becomes 2.16 TB.

The 3996 Model 174 has the physical capacity to hold optical discs capable of holding up to 5.2 TB. Each of the 174 media slots can handle an optical disc providing up to 30 GB of optical storage. The Model 174 has two 30 GB optical disc drives with an option of increasing to four drives. When the additional drives are added, the capacity of the Model 174 becomes 4.98 TB.

Adding the two optional drives to Models 080 and 174 uses eight media slots, reducing the storage capacity of the 3996.

Key prerequisites
IBM iSeries
i5/OS(TM) V5.3, or later

Planned availability date
October 28, 2005
