Symbol Technologies Unveils Next-Generation Handheld Laser Scanner and Enhanced Service Program for All Scanning Devices

LS4208 Bar Code Scanner Redefines High-End Scanning

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., - September 19, 2005 - Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today introduced the new flagship LS4208 bar code scanner, offering customers new productivity features for the retail, healthcare and warehousing industries. Recently named the worldwide market share leader for the Handheld Bar Code Scanner market by Venture Development Corp. (VDC), the LS4208 laser scanner builds upon Symbol's rich advanced data capture heritage and is the next-generation offering of Symbol's best-selling LS4000 series of handheld scanners which sold more than 1.9 million units.

Today, Symbol also unveiled its Advanced Exchange Support program, a multi-year, comprehensive coverage and support service for advanced data capture (ADC) scanning devices. Expanding on the service made available for Symbol's RFID and wireless infrastructure products, the Advanced Exchange Support with "Service from the Start" is now available for ADC devices, including the LS4208, at the time of purchase and for 30 days following the purchase date. Service from the Start is a multi-year, pre-paid, cost-effective offering for service repair, and offers the best services and support for their Symbol hardware investment.

LS4208: Designed to Increase Productivity
Designed to increase efficiencies in scan-intensive operations, the revolutionary LS4208 laser handheld scanner resets the standard in high-performance scanning for customers seeking increased productivity, ease of use and lower total-cost-of-ownership. Potential end-users include retailers needing a durable, reliable and feature-rich scanner for point of sale and back-end operations; healthcare customers seeking a reliable bar code capture tool for bedside and patient management; and warehouse workers responsible for shipping and receiving products in an efficient manner.

The new LS4208 scanner delivers intuitive, productivity-enhancing functionality to allow novice and advanced users to speed checkout lines and increase customer satisfaction rates at the retail point of sale, or quickly capture data in warehouse and medical facilities. Specifically, its unique multi-line scan pattern allows customers to quickly and accurately scan one-dimensional (1D) bar codes including those that are damaged, small or poorly printed to help improve operational efficiencies and customer checkout. The LS4208 scanner also offers a 19-inch scanning range and improved motion tolerances to provide users with greater flexibility to rapidly and accurately capture data from a variety of items without pausing between scans.

"The new LS4208 scanner is designed for customers that are focused on throughput and realize that even small increases in productivity can make a significant impact on their bottom line," said Bob Sanders, vice president and general manager of Symbol's advanced data capture division. "The LS4208 laser scanner compliments Symbol's expansive line of handheld scanners with a feature-rich option to meet the needs of our diverse customer base."

The LS4208 handheld scanner reduces total-cost-of-ownership by enabling remote, network-based device management to lower IT expenses and enable customization in large, multi-scanner environments. For added flexibility, LS4208 users can easily switch between hands-free and handheld mode enabling store associates to efficiently scan hard-to-reach bar codes, such as those on large or bulky items that cannot be lifted to counter level. Along with six-foot drop specifications that allow the scanner to keep on running even after drops, the LS4208 also offers single circuit-board construction and eliminates the failure points commonly found with interconnect ribbon cables.

The LS4208 laser scanner is available immediately around the world.

Enhanced Service and Support for Scanners
Symbol's "hassle-free" Advanced Exchange Support program relieves customers of the management and tracking of replacement units and the need to purchase, stock, and manage spare devices. Symbol customers in all industries will benefit from the Advanced Exchange Support program for their ADC devices with this comprehensive coverage. The comprehensive coverage extends normal wear and tear coverage to include replacement of damaged plastics, exit windows and triggers that may occur during "extreme" use.

"The value of a replacement device delivered the following business day is significant; and our joint customers understand this," said Robert Bailey, executive vice president, Agilysys, Inc. "Our customers seek advanced applications, technologies and services to help boost productivity. Offering Symbol's Advanced Exchange Support complements our solutions offering, allowing our customers to focus on their business, while we focus on helping drive customers' success."

Symbol's Advanced Exchange Support service for ADC devices is currently available in select regions. Symbol Global Services is an integral part of an enterprise mobility strategy to make every element of the solution work together to achieve customers' business goals.
