Websense(R) Announces Remote Filtering Capabilities to be Integrated Into Websense Web Security Software

New Functionality Will Extend Web Filtering and Web Security Policies to Remote Users, Regardless of Location or Type of Network Connection

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 19 -- Websense, Inc. (Nasdaq: WBSN), the world's leading provider of employee internet management solutions, today announced the upcoming release of Websense(R) Remote Filtering technology, extending Websense's industry-leading web filtering and web security technology to corporate laptop users outside of the organization's network. Remote Filtering capabilities will be seamlessly incorporated into the newest versions of Websense web filtering and web security software, expected to be available in October 2005.

With the growing rate of telecommuting and business travel, it has become critical for organizations to enable employees who work remotely to use their laptop computers effectively and safely. As broadband internet access becomes more pervasive in non-traditional settings such as airports, hotels or local coffee houses, the necessity to protect remote laptop users from malicious threats lurking in unknown networks intensifies exponentially. Websense Remote Filtering ensures secure employee internet use anytime and anywhere, becoming a critical component of any organization's endpoint security and protection strategy.

Websense Remote Filtering allows organization to apply internet usage policies to remote users and frequent travelers, protecting them from external security threats and managing access to objectionable web content. Secure internet access provided by Websense Remote Filtering not only provides protection for remote users from accessing phishing sites, sites that contain spyware, or sites corrupted with malicious code, but also reduces the cost, downtime, and frustration associated with compromised computers in the field.

"Websense Remote Filtering ensures that laptop users have the same policies and level of protection outside the corporate network as inside the network," said Michele Shannon, senior director of product management for Websense, Inc. "Websense Remote Filtering is integrated and entirely managed by the exact policies and same user interface as all other Websense software. There is no need to deploy a different product or manage multiple policy settings, management consoles and reporting tools."

For unprotected mobile users outside of the corporate network, the internet has become a dangerous source to accidentally infect a laptop with malicious code. Websense Security Labs(TM) discovers tens of thousands of websites every month that are designed for 'drive-by' downloads of keyloggers, Trojan horses and spyware while simply browsing websites that exploit browser vulnerabilities without end-user knowledge or intervention.

When utilizing Websense Remote Filtering while disconnected from the corporate network, if a user falls victim to a deception technique such as social engineering and is redirected to a phishing or other malicious website, that website will be automatically checked against policy settings and its categorization within the Websense Master Database of URLs. With Remote Filtering, the user will receive a "blocked" message, eliminating the need to second guess the validity and safety of websites.

When used in conjunction with the optional Websense Client Policy Manager(TM) (CPM), Remote Filtering seamlessly adds these features of web content control to CPM's ability to control application usage in order to prevent inappropriate and dangerous application and web usage. This combined solution provides an integrated and flexible solution for controlling content on the endpoint whether the user is within, attached, or connecting remotely to an organizations' network.

Additionally, Remote Filtering supports Websense's powerful monitoring and reporting tools to provide details on end-user internet activity regardless where they obtain access. Organizations can identify potential problem areas proactively through real-time and historical views of employee web usage. With this information, IT administrators can refine internet access policies, further reducing the security, productivity, bandwidth, and legal risks associated with employee computing within an organization.
