Flame Retardant has formula with thermal stability.

September 23, 2005 - Suited for use in high- and low-density polyethylenes, AmpShield 1199 can be used at temperatures to 550°F in non-FDA extrusion processes and has minimal effect on resin tensile and elongation properties. Material imparts flame resistance to polyethylene matrix at addition rates as low as 12%, but 18-20% is recommended to ensure enough is present to prevent polymer ignition. Polyolefins with proper letdown ratio of this masterbatch achieve V-2 rating or better.

New Ampacet Flame Retardant for Polyethylene Offers Improved Thermal Stability

Tarrytown, NY, September 12, 2005 - Ampacet Corporation has launched a flame retardant masterbatch, AmpShield 1199 (Product 101199), for use in high and low density polyethylenes that provides 36°F (20ºC) better thermal stability than traditional brominated flame retardants and an excellent cost-performance ratio. It is targeted for use in such areas as wire and cable insulation and construction-related films.

The new masterbatch has little effect on a resin's tensile and elongation properties and can be used at temperatures to 550°F (287°C) in non-FDA extrusion processes, such as those for film, sheet, and wire and cable, as well as in injection molding. It also has relatively low surface migration, so it has little or no effect on printing, sealing and other post-conversion processes.

Although AmpShield 1199 can impart good flame resistance to a polyethylene matrix at addition rates as low as 12 percent, 18 to 20 percent is usually recommended to ensure enough is present to prevent polymer ignition, especially in thin films.

Tests show that polyolefins having the proper letdown ratio of this masterbatch consistently achieve a V-2 rating or better. (A V-2 rating is the UL 94 criteria specifying a maximum burn time of 30 seconds after ignition with allowable dripping.) The ability to attain a V-2 or V-1 rating in a finished product also depends on such factors as the nature of the resin and filler and part thickness.

Thermal Capability of AmpShield 1199

The additive in AmpShield 1199 (Product 101199) has a thermal stability that is 36°F (20ºC) higher than the additive use in traditional brominated flame retardants like Ampacet 101834.
