New IBM Solution Simplifies Data Warehousing

Companies turning to IBM to help streamline Business Intelligence

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Aug. 17, 2005 -- IBM today announced a new business intelligence (BI) solution that combines servers, storage and software in a single fully-integrated package to offer unmatched performance for information management. BI is a process that companies use to help better understand their key business issues by analyzing data they receive as a result of ATM transactions, retail purchases and other similar transactions.

The IBM Data Warehousing Balanced Configuration Unit (BCU) combines IBM eServer pSeries p5-575 servers, TotalStorage DS4500 and DB2 Data Warehouse Edition into a single, scalable offering that can run on UNIX, Linux or AIX.

By turning raw data into useful information, companies can rapidly make informed and proactive decisions about their products or services. By combining the power of IBM systems with information management capabilities of DB2 Data Warehouse Edition, companies are able to react in real time and make changes to their business activities on demand.

One customer who is already benefiting from IBM's BI experience is First Data Corporation, the world's largest transaction processing company. First Data, whose subsidiaries include Western Union, TeleCheck, STAR Networks and SDR, processes transactions for more than 4.1 million merchant locations, 1,400 card issuers and millions of consumers around the world.

"It is critical to the success of our business that we track and monitor transaction volumes and patterns, and then apply this insight to make intelligent business decisions about our products and services," said Roman Siciunas, VP Data Management First Data. "The IBM Data Warehousing Balanced Configuration Unit provides us with the safety and assurance of cost-effective managed growth and balanced performance now and in the future."

BI is very relevant for financial services markets but is critical to other industry segments as well including retail, government and telecommunications.

"By providing a pre-tested BCU option, IBM is able to offer the industry's most efficient and highest throughput performance configurations for database queries, allowing faster analysis of data," said Karen Parrish, vice president, IBM business intelligence solutions. "Our clients will be able to stay ahead of their competitors by acting more quickly on information."

There are several key factors now driving the BI market. First is the consolidation of existing "Data Marts" into single simplified BI solutions. Companies can then utilize these BI solutions in order to gain unprecedented insight and understanding of the interrelation of customer behavior and give the clearest possible picture of customer buying patterns.

The IBM Data Warehousing Balanced Configuration Unit (BCU) provides clients with:
Simplified hardware configuration
Pre-Installed Database configuration
Systems and Solution integration testing

Additionally, the BCU uses standard IBM hardware and software components so it can be used with any of the BI software applications already qualified on those platforms such as Siebel, SAS, SAP and many others.

Information on Demand
The desire by businesses to access, manage and deliver information more efficiently is driving rapid change in the IT marketplace. IBM's information on demand approach combines deep business insight with open standards, advanced storage systems, sophisticated systems management software and leading information management software to create efficient, cost effective and flexible information infrastructures.
