SMT Metal Oxide Resistors offer power ratings to 3 W.

September 20, 2005 - SMX Series, suited for higher power circuit designs, is available with resistance values from 3 kâ"¦ to 1 Mâ"¦ in tolerances of ±5%, with TCRs of ±200 ppm/°C. Along with J-lead termination that negates TCE ratio matching concerns, series features -50 to +150°C operating temperature range and 800 V max pulse voltage. Products act as direct replacements for axial-leaded resistors and help designers convert through-hole devices on circuit boards to SMT components.

Stackpole Looks To Replace Through Hole Designs With 3 Watt Surface Mount Metal Oxide Resistors

Flexible J-Lead termination negates TCE ratio matching concerns usually associated with large case size SMD resistors...

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 30, 2005) -- Providing designers with a surface mount option for higher power circuit designs, resistor manufacturer Stackpole Electronics, Inc. recently introduced a molded surface mount metal oxide resistor technology that features resistance values from 3Kâ"¦ to 1Mâ"¦, in power ratings up to 3 watts.

Designated as the SMX Series, these rugged power resistors are direct replacements for axial-leaded resistors. The SMX Series is available with resistance values from 3Kâ"¦ to 1Mâ"¦ in tolerances of ±5%, with TCRs of ±200ppm/°C. The operating temperature is specified from -50°C to +150°C and the maximum pulse voltage is 800 volts.

According to Stackpole Sales and Marketing Director Rob Hudspeth, the SMX Series resistors will help designers convert more of the through-hole devices on their circuit boards to surface mount components. "The ability to handle up to 3W of power in a SMD package makes this series attractive for higher power circuits." Hudspeth noted also, "their rugged molded construction also provides protection from harsh environments."

The SMX Series also employs a unique J-lead termination, which provides excellent thermal coefficient of expansion ratio matching. Kory Schroeder, Stackpole's Product Engineering Manager commented on the J-lead termination by saying, "Thermal coefficient of expansion is always a consideration in surface mount designs. Many engineers are hesitant to use SMD chip resistors larger than a 2010 size because thermal stresses and flex board designs often cause the components to crack or the solder joints to fail." Schroeder added, "The SMX Series' J-lead termination provides superior TCE ratio matching to most other SMD devices because it allows for greater expansion and contraction."

The SMX Series of resistors are expected to find acceptance in a wide range of automotive, computer, power supply, telecommunication, industrial and instrumentation applications.

Typical pricing for a SMX resistor is $0.25 each in production quantities with lead times from 6 weeks, and samples are available in 4 to 6 weeks.
