Micrel Launches New, Highly Efficient 1.2A Boost Regulator

High-Power Density 1.2A Boost Regulator Delivers More Than 34V And Up To 90 Percent Efficiency

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 2 -- Micrel Inc. (NASDAQ:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched the MIC2296, a new highly efficient DC/DC boost converter. The chip provides up to 34V, allows for more than 1.2A of switch current and delivers an impressive high-power density in a tiny packaging option. The solution is ideal for driving OLEDs, TFT-LCD displays and WLED camera flashes and is especially suited for today's demanding portable consumer electronics applications. The MIC2296 is currently available in volume with pricing starts at $1.31 for 1K quantity.

"Boost applications for portable consumer electronics continue to require additional power density and efficiency," noted Ralf Muenster, Micrel's Director of Marketing for Power Products. "The MIC2296 offers a high-power density solution, which, at the same time, has been optimized to deliver improved efficiency in one of the industry's smallest form factor packages, a tiny 2mm x 2mm leadless MLF(TM)."

The MIC2296 is a high-power density boost regulator for use in a wide variety of electronic applications. It can step up input voltages from 2.5V to 10V, to generate an output voltage up to 34V. The MIC2296 provides 5 percent more efficiency than its sister 1.2MHz version, the MIC2295. The IC features a proprietary internal compensation technique that allows the output capacitor to shrink by more than 50 percent. It also offers output over voltage protection, less than one percent line and load regulation, 1uA shutdown current and excellent transient response.
