Flame Retardant Compounds suit encapsulating and potting.

August 30, 2005 - Non-shrinking castable liquid, Cable Cast FR urethane encapsulates, insulates, and provides strain relief for electrical connectors and cables. Because it forms flexible jacket with abrasion, tear, and puncture resistance, it can also repair power cable jackets and insulation. Intended for potting aerospace inserts, clear-drying 5 Minute® Epoxy FR adhesive/encapsulant paste fills gaps and bonds rigid substrates such as metals, glass, ceramics, concrete, and wood.

Flame-Retardant Compounds

DANVERS, MA — Two flame-retardant products from Devcon provide reliability in aerospace, submarine, mining, and other controlled-atmosphere applications. Cable Cast FR is a special urethane for insulation, strain relief, and repairing cable jackets. 5 Minute® Epoxy FR is a fast-setting, general-purpose adhesive/encapsulant.

A black, nonshrinking, castable liquid, Cable Cast FR forms rigid yet flexible rubber parts. This flame-retardant urethane encapsulates, insulates, and provides strain relief for electrical connectors and cables. Because it forms a flexible jacket or casing with exceptional abrasion, tear, and puncture resistance, it is also ideal for making fast, economical repairs to power cable jackets and insulation in various mining and power-distribution applications. It withstands service temperatures up to 180° F dry, 120° F wet.

Cable Cast FR has a mixed viscosity of 10,000 cps, a pot life of 10 minutes, and a functional cure time of 2 hours at 75° F. Its 100% solids formulation produces no VOC emissions. Once cured, Cable Cast FR has a tensile strength of 2600 psi (ASTM D412), a tear resistance of 325 pli (ASTM D624), a dielectric strength of 300 volts/mil (ASTM D149), and a maximum elongation of 800% (ASTM D412).

Devcon’s 5 Minute® Epoxy FR is a clear-drying, flame-retardant, adhesive/encapsulant for potting aerospace inserts and for other OEM applications requiring a self-extinguishing adhesive. It passes the UL 94V-0 burn test and the federal 60-second vertical burn test (14 CFR 25.853).

A creamy paste at room temperature, 5 Minute Epoxy FR is easily dispensed, fills gaps, and bonds rigid substrates such as metals, glass, ceramics, concrete, and wood in all combinations. 5 Minute Epoxy FR comes packaged in 50-ml resealable Dev-Pak™ cartridges that fit manual or pneumatic applicator guns. Mixed (1:1) with static mixing nozzles as dispensed, it has a viscosity of 115,000 cps, a working time of 3-5 minutes, and a fixture time of 10-15 minutes. It attains functional cure in 2-3 hours. VOC emissions are very low because the formulation is solvent-free.

Once cured, 5 Minute Epoxy FR provides typical tensile shear strength of 2800 psi on cold-rolled steel (per ASTM D1002 at 75° F and 180° F) and dielectric strength of 490 volts/mil (per ASTM D149 at 75° F). Bonds withstand service temperatures from - 40° to 200° F and exhibit excellent resistance to motor oil, kerosene, and unleaded gasoline.
