Datakey Electronics, Inc. Introduces a New Way to Quickly and Easily Perform Firmware Updates and Data Logging

Small, Rugged, Reliable Keys and Tokens are now available with up to 4MBytes of memory capacity.

August 1, 2005. Savage, MN - Datakey Electronics, Inc., manufacturer of rugged, re-programmable memory Keys and Tokens announces a new a high-capacity 32 Mbit (4MByte) serial flash memory Key (SFK32Mbit) and SlimLine™ Extended Token (SFX32Mbit).

The large memory size and fast bus speed give designers of microprocessor-controlled systems unprecedented capability to easily and reliably move large amounts of data in and out of their systems without the need for a network connection.

These readily available products give OEM products the capability to do in-field firmware updates. They also facilitate applications with large data logging requirements. Datakey Electronics’ existing family of EEPROM and lower capacity Serial Flash Keys & Tokens have already been successfully integrated into many similar data transfer and access control applications. A number of manufacturers use these products to do their initial flash load of firmware on the production line, allowing today’s firmware revision to be easily loaded. This eliminates the need to have a separate firmware loading connector, and eliminates logistics concerns caused by procuring pre-programmed microprocessors or PROMs far in advance.

The 32Mbit memory in the Keys/Tokens is accessed by a high speed Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)-compatible bus with up to 25MHz clock rate. This synchronous serial data link is standard across many Motorola architecture microprocessors and other peripheral chips. It provides a high bandwidth connection amongst CPUs and other devices supporting SPI.

The new 32Mbit products are compatible with Datakey Electronics’ standard, proven high-cycle life Keyceptacles® and Receptacles. With the availability of such high capacity keys, OEM designers can now leverage their same Keyceptacle® or Receptacle for both multi-tiered access controls with low capacity devices and firmware update / data logging / recipe upload with high capacity Keys.

These unique, fully-engineered products carry Datakey Electronics’ proven long-term support – the products will be stable, available, and supported throughout OEM products’ lifetimes. Both design specifications and application engineering assistance are available to Original Equipment Manufacturers’ embedded systems engineers.

These 32Mbit data carriers feature Datakey Electronics’ industry-leading solid molded construction, rugged wear-resistant exterior and long-lasting contacts. Unlike cards, consumer portable memory (compact flash, USB FOBs, MMC, etc.), and other data carriers that can easily fail, the Key’s body protects the embedded memory chip from physical damage and harsh environmental influences. They can be sterilized, dropped in the mud, washed, exposed to electromagnetic fields or chemicals, run over with a semi-truck—and they’ll still work.

The SFK32Mbit and SFX32Mbit have a complete line of support peripherals including mating Keyceptacles/Receptacles, Reader/Writers and Development Kits. Custom 5-Volt options are also under development and could be used to provide large capacity data transport in legacy 5-Volt OEM systems. Contact Datakey Electronics for further information.
