Microchip Technology Expands Small PIC® Microcontrollers with 20-Pin Family and Additional Capabilities
New PIC Microcontrollers Make it Easy to Migrate up From 8- and 14-Pin Products
CHANDLER, Ariz., July 11, 2005 [NASDAQ: MCHP] — Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors, today announced four new Flash 8-bit PIC® microcontrollers, which offer a cost-effective and code-compatible migration path from existing 8- and 14-pin package options to 20-pin microcontrollers with a richer set of peripherals. These new microcontrollers provide engineers with enhanced features such as steering-capable pulse-width modulation (PWM) and a synchronous serial port with address-masking for I2C™, while offering additional program and data memory.
Engineers are faced with a continuous challenge of designing smaller products with more functionality in a shorter time. Additionally, consumers expect higher quality levels, lower cost and longer battery life. Microchip’s new PIC16F685/687/689/690 help solve these design challenges with smaller 4x4 QFN package options, easy migration from other PIC microcontrollers to shorten the design time, and several new enhancements to increase functionality while reducing total system cost. The four new microcontrollers also incorporate Microchip’s nanoWatt Technology features for more control over the power consumption of the microcontroller.

The new PIC16F685/687/689/690 microcontrollers serve a broad market, including the following example applications: battery-powered devices (security systems, smoke and CO detectors, handheld devices); power conversion (power supplies, DC/DC converters, battery chargers); and motor control (industrial, home appliances, power tools).
Several of the onboard peripherals were enhanced to provide greater flexibility and ease of use for design engineers. These enhancements include a new comparator module with more internal and external connections, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with up to 12 channels. Additionally, the onboard I2C synchronous serial port has address masking to support multiple addresses. The enhanced capture/compare/PWM module incorporates PWM steering, allowing output to multiple pins under software control – a feature that provides greater layout flexibility for motor control and power supply applications. Another significant feature is the software-enabled Brownout Reset, which enables designers to significantly reduce standby current consumption in sleep. Additional key features include:

The four new devices are supported by the full suite of Microchip’s development tools, including the PICkit™ 2 Starter Kit, MPLAB® IDE (Integrated Development Environment), and the low-cost MPLAB ICD 2 (In-Circuit Debugger).
