Kuka Robotics Introduces Industry's Largest and Strongest Clean Room Robots

KUKA Clean Room Robots Designed Specifically for Flat Panel Display Manufacturing

Clinton Township, Michigan — July 5, 2005 – KUKA Robotics Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of industrial robots, today announced the introduction to the US market of a family of clean room robots specifically designed for flat panel display manufacturing and substrate glass handling. The clean room family includes the industry's largest clean room robot, the KUKA KR 180 L130 CR with a reach of 3100mm and the industry's strongest clean room robot, the KUKA KR 500 CR with a payload capacity of 500kg. Both robots are based on KUKA Robotics' market leading industrial robot designs.

"KUKA has a long history in glass handling applications, and it was natural for us to develop high performance robots for flat panel display and glass substrate applications," said Joe Campbell, director of strategic alliances for KUKA Robotics Corporation. "As larger displays predominate the market automation becomes critical, and robots like the KUKA KR 500 CR and KUKA KR180 L130 CR offer unique solutions."

The new 6-axis robots are based on KUKA Robotics' high performance standard robots. They feature polished and primed surface of castings, multilevel 2-K-lacquer-finish, stainless sheet metal covers and mounting material, in-line wrists without dust-sealing and modified seals to avoid abrasion. Both the KR 180 L130 CR and the KR 500 CR robots meet appropriate ISO and DIN standards for clean room operation. The KUKA KR 180 L130 CR robot is Class 5 according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1and Class 100 according to US Federal Standard 209 E. The KUKA KR 500 CR robot is Class 7 according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1.

KUKA Robotics Corporation, with its parent company KUKA Roboter GmbH, Augsburg, Germany, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial robots, with an annual production volume approaching 10,000 units, and an installed base of over 60,000 units. The company's 5 and 6 axis robots range from 3kg to 570kg payloads, and 635mm to 3700mm reach, all controlled from a common PC based controller platform. KUKA robots are utilized in a diverse range of industries including the appliance, automotive, aerospace, consumer goods, logistics, food, pharmaceutical, medical, foundry and plastics industries and in multiple applications including material handling, machine loading, assembly, packaging, palletizing, welding, bending, joining, and surface finishing.
