John Deere 850J Waste Handler Built for Tough Landfill Work

MOLINE, Ill. (June 27, 2005)—The all-new John Deere 850J Waste Handler Crawler delivers production-boosting advantages far superior to other crawlers in its class. With its full-featured hydrostatic drive train, this 24-ton workhorse delivers powerful performance, increased productivity and uptime while decreasing daily operating costs.

“This machine is designed to haul ton after ton of trash in the toughest environment imaginable,” said Xenya Mucha, solid waste market manager, John Deere Worldwide Construction & Forestry Company. “It’s purpose-built to be as waste proof and easy to maintain as possible.”

Powered by an electronically controlled 185 horsepower John Deere PowerTechTM 6081 engine, the 850J dozer comes in two blade configurations to fit any landfill application. The 850J WT with outside-mount 15-cu. yd. Semi-U blade with trash rack is designed for pushing waste in a landfill. The track frame has a seven-roller design with 109 inches of track on the ground. The 850J WLT with inside-mount 5.57-cu.-yd. (without trash rack) Power Angle Tilt (PAT) blade is the right machine for grading and occasional use in the pile. It has an eight-roller track frame for the heavier PAT blade and 129 inches of track on the ground. Pilot hydraulic controls and thumb-operated blade angle require less effort from the operator. All 850J dozers have front and rear track guides and sprocket guard along with John Deere Dura-Trax™ undercarriage with deep-heat-treated, sealed and lubricated track links and through-hardened, sealed and lubricated rollers for maximum wear resistance. Sprockets are segmented, recessed, and deep hardened for long life and designed to resist undercarriage packing. Extreme-service 30-inch track shoes with trapezoidal relief holes also are available.

Periodic maintenance is best-in-class, according to Mucha. Hinged and perforated right- and left-side engine shields allow efficient airflow while preventing entry of airborne debris. Both sides open wide for easy service access. “The entire machine is designed to keep debris out of the engine compartment by eliminating large openings under the mainframe,” she said. “Equally important is the hydraulically driven cooling fan. It varies the speed to reduce the air velocity through all the openings. The debris that does stick to the sideshields will be blown off by the reversing fan. This improves operator productivity because there is no need to stop to clean off the sideshields.”

The hydraulic system has been completely redesigned to feature a closed-center system with variable-displacement load-sensing hydraulic pump and pilot controls that deliver smooth hydraulic response and speed. The smart-cooling package employs a hydraulic-driven variable-speed fan that helps preserve power and fuel; the fan reverses every 30 to 90 minutes (operator selected) to blow away debris. The cycle can also be activated from the cab when necessary.

The 850J has many waste-proofing features for maximum protection. The mainframe is designed with minimal openings, forming a smooth underbelly that doesn’t accumulate or drag trash. Final-drive housing shape minimizes wrapping and sawing action of wire, videotape and other debris, while bolt-on seal guards provide additional protection. Heavy-duty tank guards protect the tanks and optional heavy-duty front and rear striker bars shed material from the tracks. A new vehicle electrical center in the operator’s station houses the sealed connectors, fuses and relays and protects them from dirt, waste and moisture, ensuring maximum reliability and uptime. Deutsch connectors, which provide better routing and clamping of harnesses, and gold plated pins are used in critical applications.

Rotary air pre-cleaner ejects dust to maximize filter life and includes a trash guard to prevent debris entry. The hinged bottom guard opens easily, and Uni-body track frames ensure heavy-duty durability. Smooth idler-to-sprocket covers shed material build-up for quick and convenient clean-out.

The operator’s station has been totally redesigned for maximum comfort. The door openings are larger and the doors are lighter, with increased strength and pull-to-release latches. Right and left side windows are hinged. The spacious, pressurized cab features standard air conditioning and heat, as well as a 12-volt power outlet, and a cup and lunch box holder. A new decelerator pedal combines the decelerator and brake functions into one pedal, and a new park lock lever simplifies operation. Ergonomically designed controls give low-effort command of forward/reverse travel, steering, ground speed and blade. The new dash panel has backlit rocker switches and a new monitor display unit. Engine speed now is controlled with a rotary dial to allow infinite speed control between high and low idle.

“Everything about the 850J is designed for maximum productivity,” Mucha said. “This machine has a lot of Deere-exclusive features that result in best-in-class productivity.”
