SMC Networks Selects Intel’s High-Performance 10Gigabit Optical Ethernet Transceivers to Enable Enterprise Networks

IRVINE, CA – June 29, 2005 – SMC Networks (www.smc.com) announced today six new 10Gigabit uplinks for its TigerSwitch™ and TigerStack™ managed switches. The uplinks, all of which use Intel 10Gbps optical technology, are available in both industry-standard XENPAK and XFP form factors, beginning in July.

SMC will use Intel optical transceivers in three XENPAK uplinks for use with 24- and 48-port SMC TigerStack™ 1000 stackable managed Gigabit switches (SMC8724M, SMC8748M, SMC8724ML3 and SMC8748ML3); and Intel XFP optical transceivers for the TigerSwitch™ 10Gbps standalone 8-port 10Gbps Managed L2 switch (SMC8708L2).

“We’re pleased to be able to take advantage of Intel’s 10Gigabit optical technology by adding its high-performance, standards-compliant transceivers to our industry-leading switch portfolio,” said Tony Stramandinoli, SMC Networks’ Director of Marketing. “Intel’s full complement of 10Gbps transceiver technology—XENPAK and XFP in distance configurations from 300 meters to 40 kilometers—made it the solution of choice for SMC.”

“The Intel 10Gbps optical transceivers are a great match for SMC’s portfolio of high-performance 10 Gigabit switches and Gigabit switches with 10Gbps uplink capability,” said Robert Zona, marketing director of Intel’s Optical Platform Division.

Beginning in July, SMC will offer three 10G transceivers for XENPAK uplink: the SMC10GXEN-SR, for transmission distances up to 300m; the SMC10GXEN-LR, for transmission distances to 10km; and the SMC10GXEN-ER, for transmission distances to 40km. With distances up to 40km, SMC’s customers have the long reach capabilities that the industry demands. Prices range from $2299.99 to $8999.99.
