Pigeon Point Systems Ships Support for Renesas' H8S Microcontroller-based AdvancedTCA Board Management Solution
Scotts Valley, CA, May 2005 -- Pigeon Point Systems™, the leading supplier of shelf and board management solutions for AdvancedTCA®, announces that its IPM Sentry line of AdvancedTCA board management reference designs now supports Renesas Technology’s H8S/2168 series of microcontrollers. These reference designs fully support the AdvancedTCA “IPM Controller” functions, enabling designers to easily integrate boards, fan trays, power supplies and other intelligent Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) designed for AdvancedTCA shelves. The new H8S version of Pigeon Point Systems’ board management reference design is known as BMR-H8S-ATCA.
The Renesas H8S/2168 microcontroller has become a popular choice for management of server systems, offering a 16-bit core running at 33 MHz, 256 Kbytes of Flash, 40 Kbytes of SRAM, and a wide range of integrated peripherals, including six I2C ports and an eight-channel analog to digital converter. Pigeon Point Systems’ BMR-H8S-ATCA makes use of this rich functionality with its 2nd generation, high availability firmware, enabling FRU designers to achieve compliant, interoperable board-level management solutions with low cost and lowest risk.
The BMR-H8S-ATCA is part of Pigeon Point Systems’ IPM Sentry family of hardware and software products that enable cost-effective, interoperable management of open modular platforms based on the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard. Using IPM Sentry components, developers of AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC and CompactPCI products can quickly and efficiently incorporate compliant, competitive and interoperable management solutions. More than fifty companies around the world, including Sun Microsystems, are already taking advantage of IPM Sentry components at the shelf level, board level or both.
To further reduce time to market for H8S-managed boards, Pigeon Point Systems also offers a new H8S edition of the IPM Sentry Board Management Starter Kit. This consists of a bench-top shelf manager board and two bench-top IPM controller boards emulating the management functionality of an AdvancedTCA board or other FRUs in a shelf. This allows immediate hands-on interaction with a fully compliant shelf management configuration before the customer's own hardware implementation has been completed. The Starter Kit also includes a detailed review by Pigeon Point Systems of the schematic for the customer’s implementation of the reference design.
The Starter Kit hardware can then be used as a reference for validation of the customer hardware during bring up. The Starter Kit includes a comprehensive set of technical specifications, schematics for the Board Management Reference design and source code for the corresponding firmware. A full set of development tools, also including source code, is provided for use in conjunction with a separately acquired Renesas emulator.
