Portable Machine Tools, Inc. Introduces Compact Boring Bar 4500

New machine provides precision line-boring of holes up to 10 inches in diameter

NEWBERG, Oregon. April 21, 2005 - Climax Portable Machine Tools, a strategic provider of comprehensive, on-site machining solutions, introduces the BB4500 Boring Machine for line boring repairs on heavy construction and mining equipment. The new tool complements Climax's existing line of boring machines, which allow machinists to perform on-site maintenance in tighter spaces beyond the reach of most boring equipment.

The new tool is designed especially for line boring repairs to areas such as backhoe and track hoe buckets, articulating joints, wheel loader arm pin-holes, hinge points in tilt bed trailers, and steering axle sleeves in heavy duty fork trucks.

The compact and lightweight tool is also advantageous for repairs to mining equipment, including king pins on large earth movers, and bucket and boom pin bores.

The tool is also suitable for boring maintenance on bridges, ships, and turbines.

The BB4500 is designed for pneumatic, hydraulic, or electric power and provides two bolt exchange of motors. Built to meet the maintenance needs of field crews, it offers the performance and flexibility of Climax's larger boring machines.

"The BB4500 completely fills out our smaller boring bar line, complementing the BB3000 and the BB5000," said Steve Muhr, Climax's VP of North American Sales. "It offers the same precision as the other boring bars, but it's lighter to meet the needs of customers performing boring on limited diameter sizes."

The BB4500's lighter weight accommodates the transport and set-up needs of machinists working in the field. Its specially designed rotational drive unit also provides a 4:1 worm gear ratio for increased torque of up to 417 ft. lbs at the bar, even at low rpms. The rotational drive and feed unit can be mounted anywhere along the bar to enable access to the work piece from a range of positions and sides. The machine can be mounted vertically or horizontally.

The BB4500 also features a high quality, keyed, chromed 1-3/4", bar for efficient power transfer, durability, and smooth operation. It is available in a variety of bar lengths, from 4' to 20' (121.9 to 609.6 cm) to meet the needs of a wide range of line boring repairs.

Climax's full line of boring machines supports diameters from 1.5 to 80 inches (38 to 2030 mm). All boring machines also feature specially designed mounting brackets, spherical bearings, self-centering cast-iron setup cones and movable rotational drive and feed units for maximum performance and flexibility. Climax's unique set-up system enables experienced operators to set up any of its boring machines in fewer than 20 minutes.
