Beam Coupler suits power transmission applications.

Miniature Beam Couplings and Oldham Couplings for Micro Applications

Marlborough, April 2005. Ruland Manufacturing Co., Inc. has extended its beam couplings and Oldham couplings line to include miniature sizes suitable for micro component applications. Beam couplings are offered as standard parts in twenty different body sizes with outside diameters as small as 3/8" (9 mm) and bores as small as 3/32" (3 mm). Oldham couplings are offered in seven sizes of set screw or clamp style hubs with outside diameters starting at ½" (13 mm) and bores starting at 1/8" (3 mm).

Ruland beam couplings feature multiple spiral cuts to accommodate angular misalignment, parallel misalignment, and axial motion with modest bearing loads. The multiple cut pattern also provides for high torsional stiffness and higher torque capabilities when compared to single beam couplings. Available in aluminum for low inertia or stainless steel for higher torque, these single piece design couplings are zero backlash. Ruland beam couplings conform to industry standard lengths, fitting in confined spaces and allowing for easy retrofits in existing equipment.

Oldham couplings are comprised of two aluminum hubs with drive tenons that mate with a floating center member. This design allows for easy sliding to accommodate misalignment. Oldham couplings have very light bearing loads since the only resistance caused by misalignment is frictional. They also have the advantages of electrical isolation and relatively low cost. The couplings accommodate angular and axial misalignment, but are especially useful in applications where parallel misalignment is present. The replaceable center discs are available in two materials to suit different applications. Nylon discs are compliant to dampen vibrations and reduce noise. Acetal discs are designed especially for precision applications. They offer zero backlash and high torque capacity.

Common applications for miniature beam and miniature Oldham couplings include medical devices, test and measurement instruments, inspection equipment, small encoders, stepper motors, and tachometers.

Company Information:

Ruland Manufacturing Co., Inc. has been a precision manufacturer since 1937, making a variety of products including the valve that pressurized the spacesuit of the first American to walk in space. Ruland’s focus for the past 40 years has been on high performing shaft collars and couplings. The complete line of products includes shaft collars and rigid couplings, and a full line of motion control couplings: beam couplings, bellows couplings, oldham couplings, miniature disc couplings and zero backlash jaw couplings.
