New DC-to-AC Inverter Powers Four CCFL Tubes for Selected 15" & 17" Super Bright LCD Displays from Sharp & Optrex

SAN MARCOS, CA-March 21, 2005-TAIYO YUDEN (U.S.A.), INC., announces the KLS-170A-the latest addition to the company's expanding line of compact single-board DC-to-AC inverters for driving single, dual and quad-tube cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) in LCD back-lighting applications. Available now in OEM quantities, the KLS-170A provides an economical, high-performance solution for driving four LCD displays in medical and industrial equipment applications requiring super-bright, high-visibility displays in 0 to 60C (32-140F) operating environments. The module provides brightness control, on/off control features and 80% operational efficiency, minimum.

The KLS-170A quad-lamp CCFL driver provides an input range of 10.8 to 13.2 V (12 V, typical), an output current of 3.0 to 6.5 mA per lamp, and a Pulse-Width-Modulated (PWM) brightness control frequency of 204 Hz, typical. Total device power output is 4.5 W per lamp or 18 W total. Physically, the KLS-170A measures 176 mm (6.9") L x 44 mm (1.7") W x 10.0 mm (0.4") H. Other (typical) specifications include 1800 Vrms start-up voltage, 60 kHz output frequency, and 1.7 A input current (typical).

The seven specific four-tube Liquid Crystal Displays that may be powered by the KLS-170A include the:
