Vapor Retarder changes according to ambient humidity.

April 28, 2005 - Suited for areas with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, MemBrainâ„¢ smart vapor retarder changes permeability from less than 1 perm in low-humidity conditions to greater than 20 perm in high-humidity conditions. Polyamide film breathes to allow excess moisture to escape from wall cavities. This helps reduce risk and liability of concerns such as mold growth and rot due to excess moisture in homes and buildings.

MemBrainâ„¢, The Smart Vapor Retarder, Reacts and Changes Physical Structure With Ambient Humidity Conditions

CertainTeed Corporation features its MemBrainâ„¢, a first of its kind vapor retarder that breathes and allows excess moisture to escape from wall cavities. This patented new smart vapor retarder is a polyamide film that changes permeability from less than 1 perm at low humidity (such as during winter) to greater than 20 perms at high relative humidity. MemBrain is used in place of traditional polyethylene vapor retarders with unfaced fiber glass insulation to provide an insulation system that's ideal for areas with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. The more typical vapor retarder material, polyethylene, while an excellent retarder of moisture penetration, does not allow drying when seasons change. When moisture penetrates the construction, it can condense on cold surfaces and accumulate in the wall cavity. Excess moisture can then result in moisture problems such as mold growth and rot. MemBrain allows closed building envelope systems to increase their drying potential with seasonal climatic changes. It can help reduce the risk and liability concerns due to excess moisture in homes and buildings that is so common today.
